Writing is pure pleasure.

In Chinese Cinderella, Adeline Yen Mah writes about her love of writing. She expresses the fact that her writing allowed her to escape the hardships of her experience. For her, it was pure pleasure.  Read this quote from her memoir, and post your ideas. Do you agree with Adeline? Explain.
To me, writing was pure pleasure.  It thrilled me to be able to escape the horrors of my daily life in such a simple way. When I wrote, I forgot that I was an unwanted daughter who had caused her mother’s death.  Instead, I could be anybody I wished to be.  In my narratives, I poured out everything I dared not say out loud (53) .

  1. Yes i do agree because when you hold in a hurtful memory you remind yourself of it over and over again. When you let it go and dont bottle it in you don`t have to think about it anymore because it`s gone.~~~~~~~~LY

  2. Yes I agree with Yen Mah because you can take yourself into a whole other world. For this writer this world was a better and happier place. CS1

  3. I do not agree. I think writing does not bring pure pleasure. For me if I need to escape horrers, I will hang out with friends. If that doesn't help i will just scream it out somewhere by myself.

  4. I agree, although I don't write outside of school and the fact that I am a bad wirter, I enjoy writing about fun memories.

  5. I agree with Adeline about pure pleasures because when you write about your deepest and most scarest hardships you feel better by letting it all out so people can know what you have faced and they can also try to help you.

  6. Yes I agree because sometimes when you have pain in your heart it is with you forever. When you tell people your story and your express yourself, it can make you feel better inside, and that is exactly what Adeline did.

  7. i agree with adelind because when you write you get to let all of your emotions out onto a sheet of paper. then if you dont want anyone to see it you can keep it in a safe place. writing gives you a chance to escape into your own world

  9. I am in the middle of this "Pure Pleasure" writing stuff. I like writing, but it is not my ideal pleasure treatment, but I guess it's okay. I really like writing narrative stories. That is what type of writing is pleasure to me because, I like to write personal stories about me or my family. Non-fiction and other types of writing aren't my ideal type of writing.

  10. I agree with Adeline. Writing gives me a chance to express who I really am....no matter what people think. I love being able to write a story, a song, or even a poem about how I feel that very moment where no one can bother me. Writing anything helps you be able to spill your story out.Stories of wishes or memories help me be who I REALLY am.

  11. I agree with her, because writing things can let your feelings out. It must have really helped her, since she had a terrible childhood. When you bottle up something sad, you keep it bottled up. But writing it out will make you feel better. Nicholas Mahoney

  12. I agree because you can't keep living in the shadow of your memory. You need to find some way to let it out. Think about it, would you have a better life thinking about a bad memory, or moving past it and experiencing new things?

  14. Indeed, I do agree with Adeline. when writing a story, nobody can tell you what you can or can not do. While writing, you only focuse on the amazing story that you write. It is as if you are writing a diary. By 200280204

  16. I do agree because we you write you can just let everything in your mind flow out. You can also be anything you want or do anything you want. It can take you into a whole new world

  17. I agree with Adeline because when i am mad i usually write about my experiences instead of throwing out physical anger. If you are having a bad day, you can write a story about the day that you wished it had been,or so whatever pleases you. Whenever i write i seem in peace,as if nothing can stop me. That is a feeling that is enjoyable, and for Adeline, with her having no one to comfort her, writing probably was the biggest comfort she had.~~~~~~~~~~~~Harrison

  18. I agree with Adeline Yen Mah because when you write, you let go of your personal horrors, so your burden you carry is lighter. You also get to forget who you are when you write. When you write or read, you experience what the characters are feeling; because in a way, you are like one. This is especially true for Yen Mah because she has experienced true horrors, like child abuse and neglect. So I agree with Yen Mah, for writing is like being a character--you get to escape to your own world and speak in your true voice, instead of saying what another person wants to hear.

  19. I do agree with this quote. Adeline had a hard childhood and i think that she got away from all of it when she was writing. She had a very tough childhood and she handled the way to ignore it very well.

  20. I agree with Adeline because writing makes me feel happy. I take my adventures and add a "wow" factor. I'll write anywhere and everywhere, but I hate to write when someone tells me to...I don't know why......Anyways, I do agree with her. :P

  35. I neither agree nor disagree. I think writing is a great way to get one's thoughts out onto paper, and since it often reflects what you're feeling at that moment, it can be relaxing. But I'd prefer to go to a friend for comfort or advice.

  36. Writing can truley be expressed in different ways. Some could favor it more than others. I'm one of those people. Writing for pleasure, as Adeline Yen Mah had stated is like opening up a whole you new universe. Writing is the best way to let your feelings off and just hang loose.Besides, when you write, it treasure memories, too. Wouldn't you agree with me that some memories are plesuravle? Yes.You can express your feelings in a way where no one can judge you, critize you, or hurt you. I get what Adelenine is trying to say, bacuse I know that whenever I'm down I'd like to write it down. Considering how Adeline grew up, writing was the only way for her life to be the way she wanted it to be. As an author's perspective, writing is like a paradise. It doesn't matter what kind of writing it is, Poetry, Liturate, Plays! It really doesn't make too much of a difference. I strongly agree with Adeleine Yen Mah epspecially when she had stated that writing was a paradise. Yes. It is a paradise. Your own paradise, where you can be who you want to be, say (or write) what you what to say (or write), act how you want to act, and just let everything go. I don't know about you, but when I grab that pen and paper, I leave the rest of the world behind.

  37. I believe that writer and reader do not differ in the way that they are changed mentally. Yes, the writer writes the book, then the reader reads the book, but they share the same experiences. A book is a portal to a different place. Writing is just slower reading, but more absorbed. Its a way to examine your life, or to trasport your imagination to paper. Truly better than TV. TV's boring. Especially Disney Channel

    ReplyDelete
  38. I disagree Shannen in a small part. There are such things as writing critics.

  39. I've always thought any kind of writing was a nice way to escape from troubles in life. I remember when I was younger I used to write stories all the time. It wasn't to get away from any bad things going on in my life, but it was pleasure. And I think for Adeline that it's great how she found a way to get away from all the horrible things happening to her.

  40. Writing is a subject that affects people in many different ways. Some choose to ignore the art. Others may choose to embrace the gift and take it up with passion that is not comprehendable to anyone but the indivisual. Writing has been portrayed to most as misery on paper. The gift of writing should not be given to those people. People like Yen Mah understand why a pencil and paper is more than just that- a pencil and paper. Writing is a world of its own, life of a million stories never ending. When the writing has stopped, the stories go on... unpredictable, but nevertheless as intresting as the other. The question is who are you to say that writing cannot affect a person? It is everything to one but meaningless to another. But never doubt that a piece of writing is not moving, enchanting, or life changing. Because while writing may bore you supposedly to death, it can help fix the loveless life of a broken hearted victim.

  42. I'm not the biggest writing fan out there, but it is true that when you write all your feelings, thoughts, and emotions spill out onto the paper like ink spilling out of a bottle. I personally like to write fiction, because it's a genre where I can make up things hat aren't true, or make my own make believe world where I can do things I normally wouldn't be able to do. Even though others hate to write, period, I enjoy free writing about anything I desire. I prefer to write somewher quite where I can think in peace.

  71. In my opinion writing IS an escape from the everyday life. You can be whoever you would like to. It expresses "your character on the inside" When writing you can tell people things you never would in person. It's also a good way to tell people what you're feeling. You can let all your emotions flow out onto the paper, and no one will judge you based on your apperance. Writing is an escape from everyday life that many people need. So in my opinion Adeline Yen Mah was right.

  73. I definitely agree with Adeline. Writing about an important event in your life, sad, happy, or things that you really just have mixed feeling about let you embrace the good and let go of the bad. To write about the bad things is to gain closure throughyour writing. I mean, sure, you might be a really bad writer, but that doesn't mean that you can't write for your happiness. Whatever makes you really happy, if you do it good or bad, if it makes you escape your problems is really amazing, whether it be writing or something else

  74. I whole-heartedly agree with Adeline- writing is an excellent way to express how you feel. Writing is a great way to gain closure, and it is a tecnique I have used many times to get out how I feel. I love the fact that when I write, I can create a whole new person, and I don't have to be me.
