Dr. King's Dream

As a 2013 citizen of a global community and young adolescent, reflect upon the promise and current reality of Dr. King’s dream.  To what extent has the promise of Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech been  realized? How can leaders of the 21st century continue to bring Dr. King’s dream to fruition?

  1. What he said was very strong for him to have a dream like that and to put it in a way where ever body understand was amazing he truly made me understand what was really going on with the blacks. If it weren’t for him I would not have some of the coolest friends on Earth. I think everybody should try to be a Martin Luther King Jr.

  2. He was hoping that people would not be judged by their skin color and that people races can come together and live in harmony. 50 years later people are no longer segregated but there are still others in the world who still judge people by their skin color, but for the most part we are equal

  3. Dr. King's dream is realized. Blacks, Whites, Asians, Indians, Islanders, ect, all live, learn, and are TOGETHER. That was one of his quotes, "Not judged by color, but by content of character." His dream is the dream of the American nation. This dream has made me realize that we aren't Black, White, Asain, Indian, but we are PEOPLE. Just people living in this world, together, as one.

  4. I love this speech and now we do not have seperatness. My favorite part is were he really says I have a dream. I also like how he didn't just come out with it and how he lead up to it. i feel like I can carry on his dream by being nice to African Americans and by not saying no you can't have this because you are African American. I hope that you feel this way, too.

PS- If we didn't have MLK Mrs. Smith wouldn't be allowed to be our teacher!!!!
I love you Mrs. Smith!! <3

  5. By now, induviduals have noticed deeply Martin Luther King's speech and his intention of it. People have reliased this not far from his death, but during that time period, it made no big impact till' the 21st Centuary. Today, induviduals can support and aknowledge (spelled wrong) his Speech, by not judging one's action by their skin, nor their appearance. Law also backs this up.

Not enough people today of the adolescent popuklation knows enough about him and what he stood for in his day and i think that needs tochange. I dont exactly knw...but somehow they still need education about it.

  8. dr. king dreamed that boys and girls of all colors would be able to be together. that has happened today. if we look around at all of these people at school we realise how much segregation has been forgotten. but sadly, some people aren't as kind. we can help keep dr. king's dream a reality by being respectful. he said "we should not judge people by the color of their skin, but the content of their heart." what he is saying is that we shouldnt judge them because of their ethnicity, but by their personality. so if we would all try to get along the world will be more like dr. k's dream :)

  9. I have a dream... probably one of the greatest quotes in all of american hiistory. martin luther king was a great man, a great leader, and overall a great person. he helped african americans gain rights that they never had before. over 50 years after that speech it is still very powerful today. he was a great civil rights leader.

  10. Dr. King's speech has a lot of similarities to the 21st centuries. Mississippi is now a non-segregated state like all the others, and people of all colors go to school together. Not very many people are racial now a days, and
everyone has a free chance of doing whatever they would want to do. In his speech, Dr. Kings says that he pictures white boys and girls holding hands with black boys and girls, and he is correct. Whenevver you look around, you see people of all colors running and playing around.Even though he gave the speeck nearly 50 years ago, he was so inspiring that his words are still in our heads today. Even though he may not be alive to see it, he surely did have a great impact on the American society today.

  11. MLK's dream has come pretty much true. There is no segregation and people aren't judged by color. We even have an African American president! We as leaders of the 21st century can help his dream by accepting all colors and races, and help others to feel the same way.

  13. i first want want to say that that without Martin Luther King i wouldnt have the education, friends, or life i have today. his famous speech said that " people should be judged by there skin color, but by the content of their charcte." to me, i think that really summed up how the world should be. leaders of today can trwat every human being equal no matter their skin color. if everyone in the world would do that, the world be a happier and more fair place. i still believe that racism is still out their, but that really needs to stop. all people are created equal, and thats how they should be treated. i sincerely want to thank Martin Luther King.

  14. I have a dream. With these faithful word, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. brought a new hope that America, "the land of the free" will truly be that. "Where people will be judged not by the color of their skin but by the content of their character." Though these intelligent words with so much truth have been followed and respected, there are some that still believe that the blacks and the other colored people are not welcome and do not belong. These dreams need to be said again and again.

  16. Today in American society much of what Dr. King dreaamed about has come to pass. Little boys and girls of different ethnicitys can hold hands. Blacks are allowed in schools that used to be only for whites. Blacks and whites sit down together, not as slave owner and slave, bou free poeple. Everybody is treated equal. Now we even have a black president. Leaders in the 21st century can continue and improve upon this by allowing even more freedoms upon the people.

  17. 50 years after Dr. King's "I have a Dream Speech", America has made progress. Not enough progress however that there is not any rascism or judgment in the world. Not enough progress tht there isnt any cruel and biggetted people. No, we arent there yet, but then again we probably never will be.
But we are much better. Since 1963, there has been a great wave of realization in this world. That all men were created equal. That no matter what the color of your skin is, you are a part of The United States of America. And the only thing we can do, is continue to get better. Continue to grow, as one.

  18. Martin Luther King's speech made a great impact in eliminating segregation in America! His speech was inspirational and emotional and made everyone understand that there should be no segregation! He knew it was wrong in his heart to be seperated from the white people. In fact, his speech included all colors to not divide themselves, but work together! I found this speech truly inpirational!

  19. I think that the promises from Dr. King's speech where great promises. The promises from his "I Have a Dream" speech have been realized to the full extent after 50 years. Dr. King did a great thing for many people, and his work can still be continued. Leaders in the 21st century can help bring Dr. King's dream to fruition by being nice to all people and support equal rights for all people.

  20. Fifty years later, there still is some segragation. None that the government has put into action, but some just within people. They still have the notion that whites are better than blacks, or blacks are better than white. We haven't completely gotten rid of racism, unfortunately.
Free speech is still part of our Consitution. Even if someone wanted to say something unacceptable to society, they could. But as the general population, we can look into people's hearts and ignore the skin color. Like Dr. King Jr. said, "...not judged by skin color but for the content of their character."

  24. The U.S has come a very long way since Dr. King gave his "I have a dream" speech in 1963. Over the past 50 years, there is more and more liberation to people of all races. Its not as segregated as it used to be. Some parts in the south are still against the idea of blacks having all the opportunities. Some people dont believe that black people and white people should be able to date, get married, work together, etc. To me, it doesnt matter what they look like on the outside. its the inside that counts. "...NOT JUDGED BY SKIN COLOR BUT BY THE CONTENT OF CHARACTER... PEOPLE OF ALL COLORS...SISTERS AND BROTHERS..." -quoted by MLK's i have a dream speech...

It is not complete yet; but I believe that our naion as a whole, America, is full of people who work for freedom and goodness, even if they sometimes think that things will lead to freedom that don't. I believe that the vast majority of the people you pass on the street are people who would smile back regardless of what you are, if you smiled first. I believe that our nation has reason to say that we have come far. We have longer still to travel, but we've got a lot of road behind. We just need to learn to judge people based on who, not what , we are.

  96. "I have a dream!" and "I wish that people were judged not by the color of their skin...but by the contense of their chareter." You may have heard one of these quotes said by Martin Luther King. Dr.King wanted all people to be treated equally. He is inspiring because no matter what he never gave up, and eventually he got what he wanted. We now live in a free country thanks to the help of Martin Luther King and many other leaders from this time period. I think Marin Luther King is also very insperational because he did not only want freedom for the African Americans, he wants the United States to be a great and mighty nation that it has evolved into today.

  97. MLK's dream is now a reality, though unfortunately he was not there to see it happen. We can honor his work by extending it past just America, and maybe someday the whole world will be treated equal.

  98. Martin Luther King changed history. His dream was for people to not be judged by skin color, but by the content of their character. His dream was realized and followed with.

  99. I think that most of Dr.King's dreams did come true.Leaders of the 21st century can help his dreams come to fruition by just being nice to everyone and treat people the way you want to be treated.

  100. Martin Luther King was the greatest civil rights leader of all time. He made awesome speeches that called everybody to action against segregation. Since his time, his dream has been mostly realized. Children of all races do everything together now. If MLK could see the country now, he would start to cry. In a good way.
Whoever killed him will be reincarnated as a fly stuck to flypaper.

  101. M.L.K was a dreamer with a wonderful dream, that all people should be equal, or as he said," a person should not be judged by his color, but of his charater." I believe that many world leaders should become more like him and try to make the world a better place, with a single dream.

  103. Marin Luther King Junior made an amazing impact on the US and his legacy still carries on today. I believe that he is one of the major factors of why our country is what it is today, and I think he would be overjoyed if he was here to see what America has overcome and turned into. I believe his dreams have come true; people of all different races are friends and co-workers. Thank you Martin Luther King for all you have ever done for our country!!!

  104. MLK was an inspiration to many people in the "I Have A Dream" speech. He talked a lot about uniting whites and blacks because there isn't any difference in between. He also said that he didn't want to be judged by his skin color but by his character. That means a lot in people in general. In the background you could hear his followers shout ing things like "Amen!" and "Yes!" This really pushed the unity in America. Just think that there were white people in that crowd. That was probably one of the first times in that time period that all races joined together not caring if anyone had a different color of skin.

  106. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. You know what he had? He had a dream. A dream that one day, blacks and whites would be treated equally. That the little black girls and the little black boys would hold hands with the little white girls and the little white boys. That they would develop a strong, everlasting friendship. He dreamed that one day, people won't be judged by their skin color and that old wrongs will be made right. In his speech, he mentioned "the American Dream". This really stuck out to me. The American Dream is supposed to represent freedom and love for everyone. Back then, people weren't treated by the idea of the American Dream. I think that over the decades, Dr. King's dream has come true. People are treated with equality and love. They have the opportunity to really embrace the American Dream. I think we have made his dream very applicable to our lives today. As a future leader of the 21st century, I'm very happy with the progress our country has made with Dr. King's wishes in mind. I'm excited to see what else we can do to embrace his ideas in the future. But for now, I think we have a pretty good start.

  107. I believe that the majority of MLK's speech has been upholded, like the part about being free of discrimination, all races of people uniting to solve the issues occuring all over the world, like poverty, disease, conflict, and corrupt government. Mostly, people are judging others for who they are. However, some judge by rumors. I believe making all this 100% complete should be the next objective of the leaders of 2013. I agree with his line "All people are created equal". More friendships are being made and it is thanks to MLK Jr.
