Farewell to Manzanar is a memoir piece by Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston. It chronicles her experience as an internee at Manzanar, one of the internment camps established for Japanese Americans during the time following the Pearl Harbor bombing of WWII. With great courage, she decides to tell the story of this difficult life experience.
O     Write about the importance of telling difficult stories. Do you think we should write books and stories that share about the hard times of our lives? Why or why not? What are the benefits? What are the negative consequences?
O     How do fear and ignorance create prejudice? Can you think of examples of prejudice (outside of racially based prejudice) that occur in the middle school setting?

  1. I think that it is important to tell difficult stories. Without them we would have missing parts of our history. The only negative consequence is that it could make the person who is telling the story sad. When people share their difficult stories we have stories from what it felt like to be on the Titanic and things like the story of Farewell to Manzanar.

  2. The promt that I have decided to write on is Telling Difficult Stories. I believe that writing and sharing difficult stories shares about others and even the historical moment. These stories teach us about life and how events can effect others lives. It also teaches others to learn about characteristics and emotions associated with that person. One drawback of telling difficult stories is that it is very hard to explain, and that people may react differently to different stories that others tell. I think that it is good to share difficult stories because it helps us to release feelings, and it teaches others about life.

  3. fear and prejudice happen everyday in middle schools across the country. People judge you on what clothes you wear, the people you hang out with, and your hair. Its very rediculous to see how people can so easily judge one another based on looks and not even their personality. Its a sad sight to see.

  4. Fear, ignorance, and prejudice all come in the same package. When you become ignorant, you develop false fears. That false fear become prejudice against anything you have that flase fear of. Prejudice outside of racial descrimination in a middle school setting is abundant. Teenagers are cruel; therefore we descriminate against anyone that is different than us, someone who isn't as smart as us, someone who isn't as atheletic, or as "good-looking." But you really honestly shouldn't judge a book by it's cover if we're talking about people. Books in general on the other hand... That's another story for another time.

  5. I feel that it is a good thing to tell people about the hard thing in our life. There are many reasons why we should share the hard times, one reason would be, what if someone is having the same thing. Then they can go off what they did and then figure out what they need to do. That would some of the good things that would come out of that. There are also negative consequences, one would be if they were reading and tried to do the same thing as the person in the book. Then they did it and something bad happened. I hope that this was the right idea in what the topic was.

  6. I believe that difficult stories should be told. It gives the basis for the whole world because if you don't write about it, who will? Through telling difficult stories of your life, you could help someone who is going trough a similar problemn and needs help figuring out what they are supposed to do. It could completely change their life. It may not be that day or that month, but maybe a few years later in someone you don't even know. Even though it would be hard and open up some closed wounds, it's good to get all of those thoughts out of your mind. It could create a whole new perspective on something thst could be important. Telling difficult stories may be difficult, but it's worth it.

  7. I think it is very important to write difficult stories, even though it is sometimes hard. Telling a persnal expeirience from a hard time can be emotionaly breaking at points, and be very sad. The author said herself that she had to dregde up memories that she had fobbiden heself to remember. However, telling hard stories can prove as a type of therapy for the athour. Maybe being able to finally let go of the hardships they posess. Sometimes writing hard stories is just what the author has to do.

  8. ignorance and fear are a bad combination. Not knowing causes some of peoples greatest fears.ignorance and fear combined most likely creates prejudice. and fear can lead to violence, outcating and things like that.in the midddle school setting there is a lot of prejudice. like things such as what you wear, how big or little you are and little insufficient things like that. prejudice affects many people every day if you realize it or not.

  9. Telling Difficult Stories
I think that it is important to tell difficult stories. Writing books and stories that tell about hard times can people get over their feeling about those times. They can also help people who may be going through the same thing. Although telling difficault stories can be good for this reason, there can be some consequences. Writing about difficult times can often be hard for the person writing the story because it drags up memories about the past that they may have been trying to forget. This is why it is important to tell difficult stories.

  10. it is important to publish your own life stories no matter how diffifcult it may be or whether or not ypu are the main character, or you pretend a new character, it doesn't matter because as long as your hardship goes out to others to help them, it's okay.

  11. Fear, Ignorance, and Prejudice
what do all of these have to do with eachother? we can think back to the Pearl harbor incedent and answer this question. the americans were scared. there was chaos. this is where the fear comes in. then, americans wanted to do something about it. they made a rash decision (ignorance)to put all of the japanese in america into internment camps. They just assumed (prejudice)that all japenese in america were working with the japanese government. Here in middle school there is also prejudice. your weight, skin color, clothes, hairstyle, and even the people you hang out with are things that you get judged by. people judge the book by 8its cover WAAAYYY to often. i believe prejudiced acts, decisions, and anything else that could be hurtful is bad.

  12. Fear, Ignorance, and Prejudice
When using ignorance and fear to allow you to prejudge somebody it is wrong. Just because people have different colored skin or different beliefs doesn’t mean have to be rude. I remember when we were changing stand partners in orchestra and I looked at the name that was next to mine. I remember think oh no not him. I had heard stories that he was rude and I thought he would be considering he was a “popular person”. I was not looking forward to meeting him, but when I did I relied how sweet he was. If I did not have a red pen he would get on for me. My prejudging was completely wrong and I found out how much of a nice person he really is. Then it leads me to thinking. If I did this to one person then what would America do?

  13. fear and ignorance cause prejudice in many ways. when someone fears someone they most likely want to get it out of their mind or out of their lives'. this is probably why there is still some racail prejudice in the world today. some examples of nonracail prejudice is mostly connects to someones appearance. if you come to school with expensive shoe and clothes, people will think that you're rich or have money. and vise virsa, if you have cheap clothes it will bring bad prejudice in peoples' minds

  14. Have you ever had to write about a difficult time in your life? Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston was a seven year old girl that was put in an internment camp. She had to go there becuase the americans were afraid of the Japenese, so they gathered them up to lock them away. Several years after she was set free, sshe decided to write a book. This book is calle Farewell to Manzanar, and it is about life in the Japenese "prisons". I think tat people should write about hard times in their life not just because other people can learn from it, but ot will help them to get over it as well. It might be painful, but I think it wil l help them. If you ever have to write about a painful memory, remember this and it will help you

  15. Fear and ignorance create prejudice by just being in the same mind or thought. When you fear someone but don’t know them personally, just from stories from others, it’s because you’re ignorant. You don’t know who they are, what they are or how they are. You don’t know. And because of this ignorance, you develop fear. Fear that they are what you think they are, and so you go to all measures to avoid them, alienate them, or even somethimes bully them. This is where the predjudice comes in. And so, many people don’t even realize it, but the ugliest, most horrible and most violent predjudice blooms from the tiniest shred of ignorant fear.

  16. Fear and ignorance create prejudice by applying one's thought on a single person, to the whole racial, ethnic, religious, or political group that that one person belongs to. For example, when Japanese pilots bombed Pearl Harbor, Americans all veered their angry thoughts on these murderous pilots, to all the Japanese living in the US, even though most of them had had absolutely no contact since they arrived in America. Of course, prejudice doesn't always have to be as torturous as internment camps. There are simpler types of prejudice; types of prejudice that occur in school. Here is an example that [I assume] many students can relate to. In PE, we are playing basketball, and two assigned team leaders chosen by the teacher are told to pick their players. The team leaders might pick a girl who's pretty, and athletic, rather than choose me: a bit chubby and bookish. This is a simple [and minute] example of prejudice that occurs every day in the average middle school.

  17. Fear and Ignorance create Pejudice. Fear is caused by a person's appearance, which causes perjudice. Ignorance is a assumption about someone without knowledge about that person. In middle school, adolecents perjudges each induvidual before evem getting a single chance to greet each other. They prejudge each other in their social ways. These pupil prejudge based on a person's clotehs, looks, and race. They judge and it's almost like segregation. Segregation is occuring, even now, in schools, teaching younger generations about seperating. I belive it is okay to make a pun or laughable joke about a certain race or person, but not seriously cause them emotional or physical pain. Though some people belive you shouldn't prejudge, I belive it is okay, because at some point, it is obvious, like if you are wearing dirty clothes, obviously, you didn't take a shower. If you are wearing tattered clothers, on the street, telling you need money, clearly you are a hobo, but if you are wearing tattered clothers, on the street, telling you need money and like feices, you clearly, are a crazy hobo.

  18. I myself do not expirience much insane predigous behaviour, however it is still present in our everyday lives. It may even be small things that are meant to be analytical such as that boy has a cast he cant be good at basketball, or that kid is fat, deformed and ugly you shouldn't hang out with him. However you can never truly form an opinion about someone with out getting to know them.

  19. In middle school fear leads to ignorance, and ignorance leads to predjudice. But when you look closely it is more girls being predjudice more than boys. Although that isn't always the case. In P.E. boys can be predjudice to girls in sports. They always pick them last or don't want them at all. They just want the althletic ones. So in middle school it can go either way.

  20. I think that writing or telling difficult stories is important. I think that the more people hear about sad and trangic and hurtful stories, the less likely history is to repeat itself. The more people are aware, the more people feel that it was wrong, the less people will do that same thing, the more people will be against it!

  22. In middle school there is a lot of prejudiceness. You are jugded on if you wear Pink or Uggs or North Face. You are jugded on how smart you are or if you are too smart. Although you may think everyone jugdes each other it is mostly the "popular" girls. you can't really be "popular" unless you have the latest clothes or phones. You may think there is a lot of prejudiceness at a middle school but most people (everyone but the "popular" people) pick there friends by the content of there character not by what clothes they wear.

  23. 1. The idea of sharing what was most difficult in life helps you to be more open and more comfortable. In fact, sharing your tragedies will help people understand including you to not make mistakes. I think we should write books about the hard times in our life, so people learn to not make the same type of mistake. Be comfortable with your hardships, and get over it. Live life to its fullest.

    2. I think seeing one country between other countries having a conflict, that people become scared that the innocent ones are going to hurt them. That's called prejudice. Judging people before you know them. Don't be subject to fear or ignorance for a certain type of people, all humans are the same. Whether one does a bad choice, then don't blame everyone else! People have been racist to some Mexicans in school, accusing them of crossing borders. That's definitely not right. Not every German wants to put you in a concentration camp! Forget the past, and live the present.

  25. Fear.Ignorance = Prejudice.
Fear and Ignorance creates Prejudice everywhere in the Middle School life! When you are a part of a group , You are automatically PART of the group! Whatever one person does , It could cause fear for some , Which causes prejudice thoughts! Rumors are a HUGE part in being prejudice , If you are ignorant and judge people by what you hear(Rumors) you are being prejudice. For example , One of my closest friends are called names that arent true , which hurts her and the people around her! She is actually not any of the names people call her. That is what I think causes prejudice.

  26. i have two answers to the first topic. yes and no. yes, because people could learn from those hardships and would try not to relive that moment in history. when you also tell the story it can releive you from those painfull memorys. i also sayed no because you don't want to scare others with your story. it can also be to hard to talk about.

in middle school you are bound to be judged.
for your clothes, your smile, your physical appearance, wieght. anything. thats what our minds tell us to do when we are scared or dont give that person chance to get to know you and we all know it wring but we do it anyway. you get judged into groups like if your pretty and skinny and hang out with other people like that then you are popular. or if you dress in black all the time your goth. but its not neccasally that way.

Even though its a hard story to tell it helps everyone who has never been in a situation like this how to avoid it. Thats why i believe it is important to always tell your past to your loved ones.

Its like judging a book by its cover. you look at them and already judge them. They didnt get a chance to find out their personality. rumors also go areound alot. the "popular" kids dont care about anyone else but themselves. They choose their friends by the clothes they wear and what type of idems they have. like a cell phone. i dont think people should be jusged like that.

  38. Middle school has a lot of prejudiceness. Everyone will judge you upon what you are wearing and your phyiscal features. Or even on how smart you are. Popular people are normally most responceable for this behavior. but in the future, think about how being judge mential and popular will help you then.

  39. Fear and ignorance can form a prejuidce opinion easily. It can not only be about someones race or religion, it can be about anything. Some things in a middle school that usually ends up having a prejudicethought being made is about cloths, shoes, hair, and who you hang out with. All of thease things are silly! As long as yuo your being yourself don't worry about what other people thiink.

  40. ingnorance and fear creates predjiduce by misjudging people. people think that what you wear, what your attitiude is, what your background is, whatever your overall personality is people judge you by it. there is a "popular" group if you want to say and they think they are all cool because they get in trouble and they wear, and who they hang out with. i personaly dont think that they judge you by that.

  41. I think people should write about their hardships so others can understand what some things were like. If people write about their hardships it will also let others know, who have been in the same situation, that they are not alone. There is also cons for writing about your hardships, it will bring back really hard memories and it may be to hard for some people to write.

For example, in 9/11 americans were feeling very prejdice towards muslims, the same in pearl harbor.when someone is a part of the same group as the person that acted out then people tend to think different towards you, they develop fear.

It makes you depressed to write it, but if you express your feelings it could make you feel better. :) You should always forget about the past and get over the past. Fear and ignorance lead to prejudice because many people judge others about what they wear or what they look like and their personalities. It makes them feel like they aren't apart of the communtity and makes them feel left out and alone. It makes them lack self confidence in themselves.*Looks Don't Matter, But Character Does.* :D ~J.D.

  46. Fear and Ignorance can create prejudice. When you are fearful of something, you are typically scared. When you are ignorant, it means that you don't know a lot about something. You will then start to judge them. Since somebody doesn't know you and they are scared, they will try to find a way to make themselves feel better because of ignorance. That can lead to prejudice, wich is very misleading. Just beecause you don't know someone. doesn't mean you automatically judge them. You should get to know them before you start to judge. They may turn out different.

  47. You've always heard of racial, ethnic, and social prejudice, but have you ever thought that prejudice occuring in own school? For example some people actually discriminate against people who look intelligent just because they themselves don't desire to look illiterate.Sometimes people also discriminate because of the clothes someone is wearing. If someone is wearing unfashionable clothes poeple tend to not want to be friends with this person. These sort of prejudice occur in our scool everyday. It is our job to stop it.

  69. It has been said, many times perhaps, that people fear the unknown. If you understand something, it is not scary no matter how awful it is; because you know what the outcome will be (no guessing involved). In fact, yuo might even feel sympathy for what you view as your tormentor.

People like to control things. They don't trust other people's competence. They are always scared that it will be the one time that the others fail, and then everything would go to ruin. They want to be able to do everything, watch everything, control it all.
When they don't know anything about something, it is completely beyond their control, because knowledge of something is power over it.

So when they are ignorant, they are desperately afraid of it. And they are also afraid to let their fear and lack of control show, so they try and control and fight against the thing they are ignorant of.

  71. I think telling sad, yet strong stories is good, and others need to take a bit of knowledge away from it as well. Stories such as "Farewell To Manzanar" give a horrific, and spooky setting to the subject. Sometimes there will be breaks where the author will pause, and shed some light on the subject as well. Readers need to go away with the knowledge, and heartpounding thoughts of what happened in ones life.

People in general, have commited many forms of prejucuce. For examole, the muslems after 9/11/01, And Japanese after pearl harbor. Many inocent people are judged by things, that they have never committed! Some things are silly, like money, color, size, looks, religeon, grades, or shape. People who are ignorant of a certain group/type of people, who may make assumptions about ALL of the peoples in a group. Fearful people may apply negative, untrue charictoristics to all people of a certain type.

  74. 1)A difficult story is well difficult to tell. It can help people learn not to make mistakes in life, so yes I think we should tell about hard times in our lives. Even though telling a difficult story is hard and maybe sad, they will always have a happy ending

2)Fear and ignorance are 2 very strong words. These simple feelings can create prejudice toward anyone or anything.Prejudice is created by the fear or dislike to someone else. An example of prejudice is that if you were to judge someone before you even knew them. They could be a great person, but you might think thattheir weird for their hair , clothes, or even their ethnicity. Prejudice should be stopped

  75. Fear and ignorance play an incredible role in predjudice, especially in a middle school setting. Many young adolescents have developed a very negative outlook on society simply based on change and the differences of people around them, which also plays a bug role in a child's lack of individuality. It is very rare that a new student or substitute teacher could walk into a classroom wearing an interesting piece of clothing or a unique hairdo without immediately becoming the target of strange looks or negative comments amongst their fellow students who are different than they are. This issue has a huge impact on our changing structure of young students, and it makes social development so much harder for young tweens and teenagers alike.

  76. there's alot of prejustice in middle school. people judge other people before getting to know them. they immediately judge you on thing like- how you look, act, your grands, friends, what you do, and what you have. sometimes it's not as bad, but it can get out of hand very easily. and as another person said- YES people do always say that i like someone which annoys me alot. they just see us talking and people automatically judge us. i mean i guess we used to be friends but since all of the prejudgement its kinda like we're enimies or something now :/ so you can see what prejudgment does to people... it's never good

  84. I believe that it is very important to tell difficult stories. Although these stories may be hard to tell, these stories are very important. They tell us about the hardships around the globe. Also, these stories sometimes teach others to be grateful for what they have. It might even help others put a positive spin on life. In my opinion, difficult stories should be told.

  85. Prejudice in middle school can be anything from oh she doesn't wear clothes from this store or oh they dont look like evryone else. People judge others before they even get to meet them, they dont know what that person is really like or how awesome they might be.

  86. I think it is very important to write about difficult stories, because it gives you a personal view on an event. People would never truely seeit through the eyes of someone else.

  87. Telling difficult stories is a must in life. If anyone is having a hard time, thaey can just pick up one of these books, and have the comfort that someone else is sharing the same pain. Plus, some people may want to learn about some of the hard times of our country. Wesley S.

  88. I believe that telling difficult stories aren't good because it will revive their bad memories back to life. Sad real stories and bad memories can buy pitiness, but the writer will earn pain.

  89. I think that writing about hard times in our lives is important. We sgould be able to express our feelings and hardships. Everyone goes through rough times and experiences pain. Sharing these times through books and stories helps the reader get his/her feelings off their mind. They can tell about their problems without knowing the people reading it, so they won't be judged. This makes it easier for the author. Writing about hard times also helps the reader by giving them a chance to relate with the author's pain and experience. When reader's connect to the book and feel the author's pain, it makes the book better and easier to read.

  91. Telling dificult stories is an important way to record our history- even the ugly parts. Although they make some people uncomfortable, they educate people of things outside of their own lives.

  92. Telling difficult stories of bad times is important both to the writer and the readers. It makes the writer get their past behind them, and it teaches the reader about previous mistakes that should not be repeated. It also helps people relize how much better off they are than others.

  93. I think telling difficult stories will be a very good thing to do. When you are telling a difficult story you let your feelings flow and make you write a better story. It will help you recover from that terrible moment in your life. It is like keeping a diary or journal entry of that time.

  94. I think it is important to write about your hard times, because it is a huge weight off your shoulders. It may be personal, maybe confidental, but when you don't want to be part of that anymore you need to get rid of it. How? Writing about it, like how people keep journals or diaries, they just want to let go of the pain and misery. It would be alot to write about something hard instead of having it taught you till you can't take it anymore. Isn't writing alot easier

  96. Fear and ignorance do cause prejudice not only racially, but socially. I think the social labels that we put on people are so weird and out there. We completely ignore what the person/people is really like. That causes major issues. Insecurity can also contribute to this discrimination. Just because someone is becoming cool and nice we push them down with petty insults. It's bullying and only gets worse everyday.

  97. Telling difficult stories can be well difficult. Telling a difficult story can cause the depression, sadness, and loneliness to come back to life. A difficult story is like a chain or a weight holding you back. If you let your story be heard you can teach other people about your experience and remove the weight off your shoulders.

  98. It is very important to tell your life stories, especially the ones that are hard to tell. Our hard times can help others with difficult times in their lives. There is also a chance that people won't appreciate your stories as much as others. They might take them as offensive, depressing. or they could just be mean and tell you to get over it. It shouldn't matter to you what other people think though, because you're helping more people than you think. :)

  99. I think that telling difficult stories is a good idea because it helps you to come to terms with your past.Often times if people don't tell or write their stories and keep it bottled up.Then all those bottled-up feelimgs will evantually explode in an angry outrage and you'll do something stupid and crazy that will land you in jail for life or on death row.

  100. I believe that fear and ignorence often create prejudice. Prejudice is the opinion formed of others without knowledge of them.I think that these two abstract nouns form prejudice, because people get jealous of others. Therefore this forms opinions about others based on what they dress like, look like, or what their intrests are. Unformed opinions about others occurs a bunch, especially in middle school.

  101. Telling difficult stories is important because it shares one's experiences. Therefore, we probably should write about our hard experiences it will be easy to remember and it will move people and they would share your thoughts. Negative consequences would include that people who don't like sad stuff will write negative comments about it, or maybe at best, just not read it at all.
Ignorance and fear causes paranoia, which leads to discrimination. Students focus on the outside instead of getting to know the person completely. No need for the Avengers to disasseble during the Skrull invasion.

  102. Writing about difficult stories can be both positive and negative. On one hand, it can stop injustices from happening again, like the Holocaust. On the other hand, some people write fictional tradgadies, which have no fundemental point. Still others write about tsunamis, or tradgadies that can't be stopped, sort of like Call of the Wild. Personally, I think there is enough sadness in the world already, so I am against difficult/heavy stories.
