Destined to Divide?

nIn her debut novel, The Outsiders, S.E. Hinton, who wrote the novel when she was just a teen herself, tackled the tendency of teens---a social microcosm of the world at large---to divide themselves. She created a fictional scenario in which her characters found ways to divide themselves along lines of difference, rather than to unite with one another.
nWriting Task: Write about ways in which this tendency to DIVIDE emerges in the world around you. Consider social circles that are close to you (ex. within your team, within the seventh grade, within your middle school, your community) and those that are beyond your immediate experience (the state/country/the globe). What are some consequences of this division? What are some solutions?

  1. I eat lunch with a very good group of people and I when I am in class I hang with a different group. I have found that there isn't a big line between my 2 groups that I hang out with. There are big lines between the popular people and me. One would be that I am not pretty enough or I don't dress right, but that why I hang out the people that I hang out with. THere are so many people in this world that juge people. They juge by the way people talk, or the way they look, or weather they are smart or not. I feel that it isn't right. I hope that I will not judge anyone that I talk to.

  2. Since the beginning of time, people have been classifying things. Animals, plants, and ofcourse humans. I personally I think that we need to clssify things so we can wrap our minds around them. It starts as a way to descrie people, getting from country, race, language, and gender but got into descrimination. people thought that because they had a specific quality than they would be better than someone else. Good or bad, our kind was always destined to divide.

  3. I think there will always be divides as long as the human race is in existence. people will always want to be with people tat share the same interests as them; whether it is monetary or social or sports related. consequences for these differences are fights, disagreements, and rivalry. a solution would be if that everyone would be themselves most people would like them for who they are.

  4. I think there will always be divides because people at school get into groups with people that have stuff in commin. a solution is that they would be close friends with people but a disagreement is that there would be drama and other things

  5. there is a few positive and a few negatives to this divide idea. a positive is that you relate and become closer to the people in your group. a negative is that it may cause fighting and bullying between the groups.
a way i see this happen at school is in groups for activites you see many groups of the same types of people. i also see this happen in the hallway. you see many of the same types of girls or boys in a big group together.

  6. there are many different divisions in our school. those divisions usually depend on who you talk to in school. it depends on how you treat other people. nut the way that division is can also effect or can even hurt other people. just imagine being the outcast of the school, the person that no one knows about or even speaks to. that kind of division between groupsmcan really urt someone in the future

  7. I noticed that kids in school always stick to ne particular group, not like a bad sort of group, but just a circle of close friends. Usually at lunch, that particulargroup will sit together. Even at playgrounds, kids that are the same age play together. You may not notice it, but most things in this world ave boundaries.

  8. In 7th grade there are groups that people get into. Those groups usually depend on who you are friends with in school. Sometimes its ok if you have groups but sometimes it gets over the top. Imagine if you were the out cast that wouldnt be fun.

  9. Along the natural lines of humanity it is only natural that individuals would group together. Whether becuse of shared characteristics, or general relationships the world may never know. However, as it is said, your enemy's enemy is your friend. Your enemys' friend is your enemy. Your friends'friends are your friends. Through these general rules grouping is based. I is important to establish good connections to be protected from rival students. The social war is raging. W ill you survival

  10. Look around. I have noticed a part of being human, is a tendency to divide. People divide into many groups, such as physical beauty, hobbies, gender, intelegence, wealth, and other factors and traits found in humans. Sometimes, this is good! For examole, two hard working people would make a good team on a project. In many ways, this can be one of the nastiest qualeties about society. People may group by weath, and team up against other classes, because they are different. In my opinion, division is a natural instinct, that is often abused.

  11. Every civilization in the history of the world has found ways to divide. Divisions come with different names, but they all remain divisions.
    Groups feel like homes.
In the same way the entire world cannot be one's home (despite what travelers say,) the entire human population cannot be united. People need a common enemy to form groups, and there is no common enemy to people.

  12. There are different people all around the world, but do we really have to seperate, or divide them? This is a common problem that happens everyday, and almost every body is guilty of social division. People choose to look at the differences, instead of the things they have in common with others. For example, when was the last time you looked at someone, and judged them, because they didnt look like you, or they weren't your deffinention of "normal". Let's be honest, it was probbly recent wasn't it? You may judge people because of their clothes, or hair color, or even race or ethnecity. We are all human, and oif you think about it, we are all the same.

  13. In this world, everybody is put into separate groups. Animals, plants, and people. In my school, I would be put in the the geeky and smart group. The one who needs an a plus in her class, and the one who is a little shy sometimes.

  14. The divisions between team 21 aren't really social groups, but people who have known each other for awhile or people with the same likes and dislikes. As for our school there are alot. Such as the athletes, popular, smart, non smart, socially akward kids, the social ones, and the comideans. I think everyone is a little bit of everything.

  15. People want to divide because that is human nature. People want to be with their friends, family, or group of people. An example of this is North and South Korea. They have separated because they are different. The conciquinces of this are they are now enemies.

  16. The tendency to divide is based on people's common characteristics. For instance, some groups consist of people with a certain level of intelligence, interests, etc. The problem is that the groups get isolated to become a little onesided on a certain thing. Some groups consist of the brainiacs, and some groups in the 7th grade don't. Some groups may even fight against another group and cause conflict. Some solutions would be to break up the groups or to focus on other categories to sort people in.

  17. Dividing is pretty common around our worlds. It happens when we gain characteristics others don't have. For example, some girls might have expensive clothes and accessories, such as Vera Bradley. At lunch, most girls with Vera Bradley bookbags and/ or Vera Bradley lunchboxes sit with eachother, and people who talk about familiar subjects such as school and stuff sit together. Then, there are the "averages". They usually sit together and have no problems communicating. On the other hand, the lower levels, and higher levels do not communicate. Or at least that's what happens n the movies.
