The Call of the Wild...Reader Response

Now that you have begun London's The Call of the Wild, take a moment to reflect. What is your reader response to the expository details presented in the first two chapters? Consider the setting, conflict, and characerization of Buck. What are your predictions for action to come later in the novel? Remember to read and react to at least one post of your classmates. Also, remember that your posts are to be scholarly and respectful in their tone.

  1. I think that Buck is having a hard time getting used to the hard winter weather. Since he used to be a house dog and was always feed he is having a little bit of a hard time. I think that Buck will get more used to the snow and that he will become a big snow dog.

  2. The Call of the Wild shows how animals can be in the cruelty and harshness of the wild. Buck is self confident and careful. He is used to being a leader and supplied with everything, but when he is dognapped, he must get used to the opposite. I can't wait to read on and see how Buck survives. I think he will adapt and get used to living IN THE WILD!!!!

  3. I think that Buck is going to be a famous snow sled dog.He will have to adjust to the snow and hes new friends, or enemies. He will have to work ard and make a new personality for himself to fit in with the new dogs.

  4. I used to live in Michigan, so I am used to the cold and snow, I personally love the snow! I think it's sad that Buck got taken away from his family, I couldn't imagine if my dog,Otis, got stolen! I predict at some point in the story his original owners are going to come rescue him!

  5. I think that buck is a dog with courage but filled with terror because of the vicious kidnappers that beat him. Also I think later in the book that buck will turn into more of a wild dog.

  6. i think that the call of the wild is a great book so far because Buck looks at the world through the eye of a human but now he has to live in the cruel world of a tortured sled dog.

  7. i think buck is having a hard time fitting into the story. he was first kidnapped and now has to fit into his surroundings.i think buck now has to see that he not at home anymore. i think in the future he starts to change to his surroundings, and will finally fit in.

  8. So far I think this is a good book, I like that the setting is in the aritc because you rarly see books that are based in the artic. I also think that Buck is a great character for this book. The details are really good in the book, its like a movie in your head. I can't wait to see whats coming up, I think it will have a lot of action. I think Buck will turn wild and do a lot of stuff that he usually wont do. Chris

  9. I so far think that Buck is a dog in terror. Some mean, nasty kidnappers took him in the middle of the night. He is now living with French-Canadians and also there are some other dogs that live with him too. So far it is an okay book but, I have a feeling it is going to get alot better!:)

I think the Call of the Wild is a good book , it is a little sad though.Buck gets dog naped and then bought by a man.He takes Buck to a snowy place were dog are always fighting. He obeys his new master and learns quickly. The master is very prode of Buck and thinks he will be a good sleading dog:)

  11. I think that this is a coool book ,but I hate how they treated poor BUCK the way that they did. He went from being arich pampered dog into a hopeless dog in the blink of an eye.!!! I pridict that he will continue to be thrown around poor Buck :( !!!! :(

  12. This story is a very good already. When Buck jumped out of the car and was struck by the club that was a cool part. I feel alittle bad for Buck because he was a dog that was spoiled and he had the good life but that is no more, Buck has to get used to the new life he has. He is going to have to sleep in the snow and find his own food. I feel this is going to be a really good book and im excited to see what happens next. 1WB

  13. Buck the dog lived in Santa Clara valley. He got dognapped by the gambling Manuel. He got beaten by the man in the red. Then he gets sold to Perealut and Francois. i think he's going to go in the Itiarod and win it with his friends.

  14. In my opinion, I agree with 1LF. I think the "Call of the Wild" starts off with the characterization of Buck, who is a loyal, mix-breed dog owned by his beloved owner, Judge Miller. Buck is taken away from his pampered life and into the wild, where he starts to learn survival skills to help him in the wild.

  17. Buck is a diog whoes life has always been god and he was satisfied with his life. He was not selfish. The setting is somewhere in Canada. It is farther up north where snow lay. The conflict is that Buck was dog napped and taken to a French Canadian. He was sold several times before he reached the French canadian. In the far future of the novel Buck will most likeley pull a sleigh but one day the dogs have a crash. Buck will then become wilde.

  18. I have already read the book and I cannot make a prediction without really giving any spoilers or lying. I can tell you guys that Buck never sees Judge Miller again... and its not really a sad thing because Buck actually does not love him...so...

  19. I think Buck is having a hard time adjusting to his new life, but I also think he will adapt quickly. I understand the setting is somewhere up north, but I am clueless as to the specific location. The conflict in "The Call of the Wild" is very intriguing, but I felt bad for Buck when the man in the red sweater beat him with his club, along with all the other poor dogs.

So far, I think this book is excellent, and I believe the suspense will build and it will get even better. :)

  20. Buck is a adventurous dog who doesn't have many boundaries. He is pleasant, but was taken away from his owner, Judge Miller. This happens somewhere in Canada. I think that Buck will try to run away because of his dangerous surroundings.

  21. I think that buck is going to make it in the world of dogsledding. He is smart and strong which was proven with the man with the red sweater. He is learning his place like hp73 said, and he is learning new dogsledding tricks. This was a great first 2 chapters!

  22. I agree with what 3mdo said, but instead of crashing, he will most likely succeed in his sled dog life but get punishment for everything he does wrong. I think that the dognappers should treat all three dogs with respect.

  23. The book Call of the Wild is very interesting. It is about a dog named Buck who is being sold from place to place. He was being hit and beaten by the strangers/kidnappers. As we continue reading this book we will see how Buck grows.

  24. I think that later on in the story near the end Buck will find a new owner. I think the story is a good book and Buck is a good dog but if he gets bad he isn't. Right now he is on a snowy beach I want to learn the entire story.

  25. Buck is a dog who is very dumb and does not think about what he does all that much. In this book buck is beaten and he goes from house to house. Then at the very end of this chapter he sees snow for the first time. He is very cold and embarrassed when he first sees the snow. But, after a while he learns the ways of the wild.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I think that Buck is a very sweet, protective dog that is strong an d courageous. But i absolutley HATE!!! the way he was treated. Buck is an animal and he should be treated respectfully

    ReplyDelete
  27. Buck is having a hard time adjusting to living in the wild especially after being beaten by the man in the red sweater and then getting sold to an unfamiliar man and going on a boat to some where cold. He had never seen snow before so I think that he would be having trouble adjusting to being somewhere so cold compared to where he used to live. Also he is having to fight for food and just fight to stay alive.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I agree with Lauren! I think that Buck is confused, lost, and hopeless. I know he is wishing to go back to the Judge and the warm sweet house. What Buck still doesn`t know that he is goiung to become a sled dog. I think that he is going to have to man up and stay strong. Although he has been going through hard times ( like being dog napped) i think he will have a bright future. - Kaitlin Crumrine

  29. 2ohu,
Buck is a dog who seems to not really know what to think of himself. The man in the red sweater and he thinks of him being the angrer in his life. also He has been taken away and now has a tough life. But he is learning, Billie, the dog will be a good friend because he can be friendly, the other dogs are kin of mean and want to be left alone. Billie is nice. He has human like characteristics and i think thats what makes this a good book!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Buck was pretty much a spoiled dog before all this happened. He was never treated badly, never had to worry about food, and he thought of himself as 'the king'. That all changed when a man he trusted gave him to weird strangers and he was going from place to place and every place he went he was treated horibly. It turned him into a pretty savage dog. Then he's forced to go to the snowy, cold forest and pull a sled for these men along with other dogs. He has to learn to get used to the other dogs and know which ones to stay away from. He had everything done for him before, but now he has to learn to take care of himself.

  31. buck is a dog that has lived very good and now he has been taken away. he is learning to fend for himself now. he has been beaten a lot and has eaten lots of raw meat. he is now learning to become a sled dog. he has become a little meaner and stronger.

  32. Well, I think that Buck is a very easy going "you-leave-me-alone-I'll-leave-you-alone" kind of dog. He didn't really pay attention to his surroundings until he was dognapped. He had no clue what people were like out in the real world, because he was so used to being "king" in Judge Miller's Backyard! He thought that everyone was his friend, that no one was out to get him, so he trusted very easily. I think it was a huge culture shock for him to be sold, transported, beaten, abused and rudely spoken to, because that is not what he's so used to. He was angry and frustrated and totally did not know what was going on during Chapter One! Chapter Two, however, is a completely diffrent story. Like I said before, Buck was so used to the pampered life never having to worry about food, water, and/or shealter. During Chapter Two, his complete change began to show it self. He doesn't care anymore, ever since the man with the club beat him. He just lugs around all day, following what the other dogs do, not bothering to escape, not even complianing to any of the people around him. He's just lonely and mouring now, knowing there is nothing he can do about it.

  34. Buck was a loyal and spoiled dog, filled with courage and terror (later on in the story). The setting was first in Judge Miller's home, then in an alley where he got handed off to the stranger. The last setting was somewhere cold probably up in Canada somewhere. When Buck was beaten with the club he learned a lesson. Never fight back these people because if you keep fighting then you will eventually die in the process of trying. I believe that Buck will eventually fit in and eventually know the routine, if there is one, and hopefully get away from these horrible poeple who are treating him with such disloyalty

  35. buck is a couragous dog with bravery and couage.i think that buck will die in the end but he will die a hero.buck is a good dog in my opinion.

  36. The book is nice so far. It's full of suspence and adventure. Buck is a dog who lives with Judge Miller and his two sons. He is civilized but spoiled. He thinks that he is the king of this land and everythuing is his. Then one day, when his owners were at a meeting, Manuel, the gardener, kinapped him and brought him to a man who beat Buck up. Then one day, Buck gets sold to a fair man named, Francois. Francois makes Buck a sled dog and trains him. What I think is going to happen is that Buck is going to go enter some races and good things haappen, but one day, a sleding accident kills all of the dogs but him and his owners die. 2ash

  37. This book has intrested me in many was so far in the first two chapters. I mean, there are so many good vocabulary words in the story! I can tell why Ms. Smith picked this story. It has such a strong conflict. Sadly, I missed a majority of the second chapter. Consirdering that the story says that Buck will never see his hometown again, I predit that Buck's future will be taken in a complete differnet directiopn since he has changed so much. Also guessing from the cover pf the book, Buck will most likely train to be a sled dog. I agree with 3mdo, Buck was living the good life and now he has to live on his own, but I think that he is doing pretty well so far in his life changing experience. I think Buck kind of prepared for any situation like this to be able to handle himself so well.

I think in the future Buck will experince new hardships. I also think that something good will happen to him as well though :)

  73. Call of the Wild starts off with a bang. It talks about Buck's life of luxury. He is kidnapped and taken to the Artic. It then talks about his life in the Artic. The setting is California, but it is mostly takes place in the Artic which is the other setting. The conflict is Buck trying to fit in in the Artic. Buck is smarter than the average dog. He's like a human who processes everything that goes on around him.

  76. This book is of a dog named Buck. He gets taken by his master's gardener and is exchanged for money. He is given to dog nappers that take him to an older man wearing a red sweater and after not being fed for two days and two nights, he is enraged at the man who he has decided is the boss of the dog nappers. He battles the man, but the man has the advantage of a club and he beats Buck until he gives up. Buck learned (but did not exactly accept) that a man with a club was more powerful than any dog. If he kept fighting he would soon end up like some of the other dogs that fought to the death and were killed. A couple weeks later he was sold to a man that was from the french fat of Canada and was shipped on a boat where he met a girl dog named Carly. Carly was playful and they soon became friends. When they were let off the boat, Buck witnessed Carly being attacked and killed by a husky pack. After being in his first snow, he is very overwhelmed about things. I love this book already and can't wait to keep reading it!!!! :D

  77. I think the book, Call of the Wild, is very exciting and fun. The main character book, is a strong, royal-like, large dog who is lives with Judge Miller and his family. He is unkindly stolen by the gardner, Meguale(dont know how to spell xD) and is taken to a man in a red sweater were he is beaten without mercy. Buck tried hard to fight back but after awhile he learns that any man with a club, is ruler. After he is bought by some fair men who take him to the northen parts of Canada(I think) and he is thuroghly emmbaresed when licking the snow cautiously while the humans around him laugh.

I predict Buck will eventually find a way to the top again and grow accustomed to his new enviroment.~4AP
