Taking the Lead

In Chapter 4 of Call of the Wild, there is tension between Buck and Sol-leks. The source of this tension is leadership and whose charge it will be to lead. Buck believes it is his right to lead now that he has defeated Spitz. Consider how this issue of leadership battles relates to real life. In doing so, discuss your ideas about one or all of the following:
  • What makes a good leader?
  • Is it ever appropriate to usurp leadership? If so, when? (Use dictionary.com if you don’t know the meaning of usurp).
  • What problems arise when a team/group doesn’t have the proper leadership? Explain.

  1. to be a good leader you have to be able to take control of the people your working with. you also have to be a responsible person. you also have to be able to keep your group on task. i believe everyone has the ability to be a good leader.

  2. A person who makes a good leader can do the right things, behave, and have people look p to them. You do not want a leader who is really bosy.

I think to be a good leader you have to be able to work with people in your group and that you have to know hat you are doing

  4. A good leader should be responsible, and should have experience. Whe a team/group doesn't have the right leadership, the whole team/grup will slowly fall down. Without the right leadership, no team/group will be the best they can be. Such as dictators, I beleive they aren't the best leaders.

  5. What makes a good leader? Well a good leader is not born. There are many types of leaders; dicataors and frendly. A good leader is responsible, good listener, and sholud have some experince. I think leaders should have a little dictatorship- but not a lot. If a leader gives you to much freedom, it would be a mess. That's why I think good leaders give fseedoms but have restrictions.

  6. It can be OK to usurp a leader, but only in certain conditions. I have a real life exmple. In Libya, citizens are trying to find their leader and kill him. He was being very mean; by bombing his people and taking all of their money for himself. He was a dictater. So in this case, it's OK to usurp your leader, but not if your leader is a good person.

  7. I agree with GLu. I couldnt't have put that better myself. That is definately what a leader should be!

  8. To be a good leader you need to show that you are trusting and responsible. You also need to know the people in your surrondings and stand up for them if they need it.

  9. I agree with GLu. To be a good leader you need to be able to take control during a situation, keep a calm head, be able to speak up in a croud, and be responcible.

  10. To be a leader, you have to be fair but strong. You have to be able to take charge and guide others. Not always, but sometimes, yes. If you deserve to, like Buck did, you can try to get your position. If there isn't good leadership, then things can go wild, not planned out well. It would be trouble. Buck is a good leader though, and can keep things straight.

a leader is someone who will never let you down, you can always count on them to have your back. They will always work hard for what they want to accomplish.

  12. To be a leader you have to be able to work in a group and you have to be fair to your team mates. If you use too much leadership then everybody would be a leader and their would be no followers. A leader is a person who can guide people in the right path. Like in the book Call of the wild, Buck is a good leader.

  13. To be a leader, you must have the character traits of one and you must be able to guide and lead your companions. You also should have a fair sense of justice. It is sometimes appropriate to force your way into leadership because, one leader might be a bad, unfair leader. If a leader doesn't rise, then there will be utter chaos.

  14. i totally agree with you 1mwo, you need to have the traits. To be a leader you have to have good leading skills. some examples would be having good ideas, to do the right thing when no one is doing it, and speaking out what you think is right. Also you should set a good example for others to follow.

  15. A good leader is somebody who can take control of their own actions. I think that nobody should ever be usurped (hehe, funny word)of their leadership. When a group does not have a leader you might spend a lot of your time trying to find a leader figure.

  16. A good leader is someone who can take charge, get things done(and get them done right) and make othersbe up to standard as well. When a group doesn't have proper leadership, they don't get things done and are not up to standard. In order to succeed you have to have good leadership.

  17. LEADER.
Be a Leader, Act like a Leader, and Cooperate like a Leader.
Most people wouldn't know what that means. Being a LEADER, can have many difffrent meanings according to who you are and what you believe. Well, I believe that a leader can LISTEN to other peoples ideas, THINK for themselves, LOOK OUT for others, ACT on a what-seems-to-be-impossible dream, SHOW that they can do the impossible,TAKE CONTROL of the initiative,NEVER be too usurp,ALWAYS stand up for themselves, LEAD everyone in the right direction without looking back, NEVER settle for less, ALWAYS involve others, and NEVER ever Give Up.
    ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
    That's what I think a leader is.

If a leader doesn't have all of ^^^ that^^^ then, maybe they haven't seen thier full potetinal yet,but sometimes, this can cause a MAJOR problem within a group. If a group doesn't have a proper leader to step up & take charge, then...what's a group without a leader? That's right, nothing. Either they can all be leaders, most of them can be leaders, heck, even ONE of them can be leaders, but if there are no leaders in this particular group, not even the slightest bit, they are probably not ready for the upcoming task.

  18. Being a good leader doesn't always mean that you're the strongest or the toughest. It could mean that you are the wisest and make the best decisions for what you do. Without the right leader, your team or group could fall apart or only have half of the people actually supporting you. In real life, people not choosing the right leader for small things or important things could lead to disaster. It just depends on what type of leader you and your group choose. 2MHE

  20. A good leader is able to take charge, stay focused, and get things done. Sometimes it is ok for a leader to forcefully take charge, like when the current leader is not doing their job, or when there is no leader to take charge. Certain problems arise when a team does not have a proper leader, examples may include: they might fall behind or not get things done, because without proper leadership, the team members won't know what to do.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Being a leader takes skill. It will take courage and responsibility. The leader also must push his team but not over push them. They must be able to work hard and be smart and swift. In Bucks Case, he must be savage and swift. He must fight for his position and be courageous.
Buck usurped So-oleks. In this case, it shows that h has what it takes to be a leader of the team. In real life, this is not good unless the leader is bad.
In groups, if there were no leader there would be chaos because no one would know what to do. Schools would be crazy with out principals. Classes would be crazy without teachers.
In this case, a dog team wouldn't know what to do with out the lead dog.

  22. To be a good leader you need to be fair and responsible.Every group needs a leader and a leader should not take what they have not earned. In order to be a good leader one should be able to have self control,be able to send people in the right direction, and definitely be dependable. Finally a good leader knows when to stand up and when to back down. For example, there is a group of ten people and four are elected as leaders. Two of them know that the others are clearly better as leader so they back down. This is a good example of a leader knowing when to stand up and when to back down.

A good leader is wise, they can take action quickly when diaster arises, and they can also be calm in diasteris situations. Do not usurp a leader because that means you are using the leader all to yourself and that is not a very good thing to say or do. If a group doen't have good or well formed leadership, the "law of the wild" will rein. The group will slowly fall apart and be lost and take no action if there is no leaders to lead a group of followers.

  25. A good leader uses their power to help people not hurt them. A good leader is responsible, organized, and reacts quickly( and calmly) to situations. Also good leaders include everyone in the group and is fair. If a group doesn't have a good leader than the group won't get anything accomplished.

  26. When a group or team doesn't have good leadership, I think that it will be close to total chaos, unless someone in the group decides to even it out. Like for example, you have a group project with five people, and there are 8 assignments. If there is no good leader, and nobody is there to even it out, by the time it is due, your team will probably have one or two assignments finished. If there was a leader, he/she would have told who to do what and kept it "un-chaotic."

To be a leader means to have courage and to stand up for yourself and what you believe in. It means to respect others and to also have integrity. That is a major part of being a leader. A leader is wise and is always positive and motivates others.

  28. I think the qualities of a good leader is taking responsibility for you actions, and being honest. When a group doesn't have proper leadership, it will be harder to get things done. The group will will fall behind. I think it sometimes okay to usurp leadership. For example, dictators take over countries and take away the rights of people, and that is not good. That is why the U.S goes in to usurp the leadership.

  31. If there isn't a good leader in a group there can be many problems. For example, if there is a band and the band leader doesn't care what song they do and he is always on the phone, every person in the band will probably want different songs each person. this will lead to fights.

  63. It isn't really right to usurp ("illegally" take a position / take the place of someone else by force.) someone (or somedog), but in Buck's case, he was right to challenge Spitz. Spitz wasn't being a good leader. Buck had the correct characteristics for a leader. He was cunning, loyal, strong, compassionate at times, fierce at times, but at other times gentle. Buck also knew the law of club and fang. He was independent, and sometimes he rebelled, but he understood the concept of respect. These are characteristics of a leader, and Buck had them all.
