GA Peach Author Tour

Last week, we had the pleasure of hosting the GA Peach Author Tour. Authors S.R. Johannes, Jennifer Jabaley, and Vicky Alvear Schecter joined us to share ideas about writing and their experiences as professional authors of tween and young adult fiction and non-fiction literature. We learned so much. In this blog post, comment on either your favorite aspect of the tour or a technique that you learned and can add to your writer’s toolbox.

114 comments:

  1. We went into Mrs. Pearce's room and the author had us make a outline of a story. Basicly, what we did was make a story in 5 minutes. First we wrote who the story was going to be about, next we wrote about how they look, the family, the family's issue, the problem, their goal, and how they want to reach the goal, and WA-LA!
    A story already made up~!

  2. During the author tour i really enjoyed S.R. Johannes. when we all split up, i was with her. i loved the technique she used in her books; ending a short chapter at a mini climax! i am writing a story and i found this technique very useful and helpful. i hope that one day i will get a book published just like her!!! :D

  3. When the authors came I learned how to write suspense with Jennifer Jabaley. It was afun skill to learn and now I know how to write it correctly.

  4. I really enjoyed having the authors over here. One technique i learned from S.R. Johannes was that in a thriller, you don`t have to have it all action packed. To make a well devoloped thriller you need to add tension and other elements as well. My favorite part of the tour was when they told us how they wrote their books, about the covers, and titles. Having the authors over was very fun.

  5. in the authors visit i did learn a lot. i ve learned what authors really go through to publish. i never would have thought that it would take so long to write a book alone. also, i was amazed how must rejection you sometimes have to go through to finally publish a book.

  6. During the GA Peach Author Tour, I learned many writing aspects from all of the writers. What I learned from Ms. S.R Johannes, was that there are ways to create a thriller novel. Some of the ways include: Cutting off chapters, Don't make it ALL about action, and have twists that involved and create suspense for the reader. From Ms. Jennifer Jabaley, I learned that once you find an interesting idea to write on, Go for it and stay open minded to think outside the box. And finally, I leaned from Ms. Vicky Alvear Schecter was that you can take something that interests you (In her case, S.S) you can build off of it to make some incredible books! So overall, the tour was great and I learned a little something from each of the authors to advance and richen my writing pieces.

  8. I really enjoyed having the authors come and visit. My favorite part was getting to hear how writers make books. I did not know that it can take years for books to become published.
A writing technique that I learned and that I can use is suspense. Suspense can keep the reader interested in the book and wanting to find out what happens. I also learned that in each chapter of a book it is good to have an exciting event, then at the end of the chapter have the character find a way to resolve the problem that occured in that chapter.

  9. A technique I learned was to go where the reader doesn't expect you to go. If your character is hanging off a cliff and your thinking of using someone to pull them up, do the opposite. Instead make the person unable to pull them up and let them fall to their death.

  10. Well I had Jennifer Jabaley as my teacher in the break out session. The session was very educational. We learned with Mr. Jennifer how to write suspense. You have to make the reader curious. A good way to build suspense is with the Inhale/Exhale technique in each chapter. With the inhale you establish the character’s motive and the consequence. With the exhale it is the result of the inhale. This is where the character thinks about what has happened. This cycle continues for a really long time and you have yourself a nice novel full of suspense.

  11. I learned that creating a character is simple if you have some basic components, and it can easily set up a good story. You need a physical description, a description of their personalities and a descripton of a conflict they are facing. KK

  12. Well their were many things that I liked about thwe author tour.my favorite alspect was hearing about books that i have never even though of reading. Like the book On The Bright Side, I feel like that would be a great book to read, because the was S.R. Johannes exploaned it sounds great. Lipstix Apology is also a great book because I love the feeling of reading love stories. Also the book Cush Control, I feel that I would enjoy reading. It also would be cool to read Cleopatra's Moon, because i take a year long Latin class and we are learning about Pompeii. I can't wait to read these books.

  13. on the day of October 31st, on Halloween, the students of NGMS Team 21 were very excited. Why? Well, it was not only the because we were going to recieve bags of candy when we would to go trick-or-treating; it was also because three Georgia authors: S.R. Johannes, Jennifer Jabaley, and Vicky Alvear Schecter were going to visit our school! I was very excited to hear them speak, and I was definitely not disappointed. My favorite aspect of the Georgia Peach Author Tour (that was the formal name of the visit) was when I got to hear the authors' stories of writing, and creating books. I was quite amazed when I heard that all 3 (even though Vicky Alvear Schecter went to college for literature, she really had no previous experience in writing, except personal musings) had absolutely no experience in writing! They had simply read a lot! This was a big inspiration for me, being quite the avid reader. I have always had the yearning to publish a book of mine, to share my story with others, and the probability of me doing so has just risen ever since these 3 authors came to visit. I really enjoyed the GA Peach Author Tour, which was not only just a lecture, but more like a conversation; with humor, and honesty. I would have no hesititaion if I were to see something like this again.

  14. I was really great! I learning how to write thrillers, by using page-to-page action with it! I think by taking from their personal experience, I have become a better writer! I really liked the part where they were giving advice on how they formulated ideas with activity around them! I never thought that's the REAL way they figure ideas for their book! They tell to pay attention to the world, and look for any peculiar detail. It's interesting how they shared their ways on how they became a writer! I really enjoyed the Author Visitation Day!

  15. My favorite aspect of the tour was learning new ways to increase my writing potential. I learned about how to add suspense to a writing piece in order to fully ingage readers into the story. All you needed was a little "misfortune" to occur to a character in the story in order to keep the reader wanting to continue on to see, "What will they do?" "What are the consequences?" "What will happen if they don't?" Also, Jennifer Jabaley showed some of us how to create a wll-thoughtout character, and a basic plot, in merely five minutes. It was amazing to see that all you needed for basic writing was a name, age, house, want, problem, and motivation, plus some time to think. Ms. Jabaley even let us do a few examples of how to keep the story going through twists and turns throughtout the plot. all in all, it was a very intiguing day with authors who had different stles, tases, and elements in their work.

  16. On the GA author tour, I especially loved when we spent the one on one time with the authors. I was in Vicky Alvear Schecter's class and truly enjoyed what we discussed.
We talked not only about the key of suspense, but learned about gruesum historical fiction like Cleopatra's life and the process of mumification!
Thank you to all three authors that came and shared with us!

  17. The Georgia Peach authors tour was a really great experience for me because (1) I got to meet authors and (2) I was able to learn a lot of writing techniques and tactics. It was really great to know that I can create a storyline and well developed characters from just thinking about a couple of easily answered questions! I thought that, overall, it was a great thing to do.

  18. As a young author, I really enjoyed many things about this Author Tour.
One of the things I liked most was learning how I could make my book more adventurous and exciting. S. R. Johannes was very thourough with describing to us how to create a page turner.
One technique is to cut to another chapter right in the middle of a lot of action. Let's say, I've written something like this:

I found myself running, faster and faster, through the forest with every stride of my long legs. I held my hands out in front of me, trying to keep the branches and leaves from smacking me in the face.
I stopped for a minute to make my next decision on where to go.
That's when I heard another pair of feet running behind me.

What I just did was cut in the middle of action and left suspense. You want to know what happens next, right? Exactly my point.
I want to give a big thanks to S. R. Johannes once again. She has made me a better writer and i really enjoyed her advice and personality. Thank you!!!!!
Also, I would like to thank Jennifer Jabaley and Vicky Alvear Schecter for coming in as well. I learned a lot from them and really liked having some published artists come in to share thier stories and advice.
    Thank you so much!!!

  19. Hey Yall! The that the GA Peach Author Tour wAs sooo much fun! It was really special because u got to learn more about what it was like to be a published author. I didnt realize how long it would take and how many times i could really get rejected. I was thinking; Oh! I will just right a book and get it published. No Biggie! No sweat! But now I realize just how hard it can be. And I also realize that u dont get much say in the illustrations for the cover. I have read many-a-books where i was like: did the illustratoreven read the book? Now i realize that No they did not actually read the book before hand. Huh. The lady that my group got to listen to for the writer's workshop was Ms. Vicky Alvear Shecter. it was amazing to see just how much she actually new about history1 She is writing a new book on POMPEI! COOLIOSIS HUH??? Well I gtg! BAI! ily yall!

  20. Last week on halloween we had the Georgia Peach authors come in and talk to us about thier history and their experience of creating, developing, and getting thier book published.I learned that it takes a year to make a book and if you want your book to be a movie you have to give up your movie rights and it might not even be a movie. :D

  21. I loved the Gorgia Peach Author tour it was lotsb of fun. My favorite Authoer was S.R. Johannes and luckily that was the author I got to do the how to write session with. I got to hear about lots of new books like Untraceable, Cleopatra's Moon, On The Bright Side, and Lipstick Apology. I really want to read On The Bright Side it sounded like a really good book.
I loved how lipstick apology came from Jennifer Jabaley's mom calling her before the her plane took off saying "If the plane goes down!!!" that was really funny. I can't wait until i read their books my friends have already started reading their books. i am in the middle of another book so I am kind of rushing through so I can read their books.

My favorite author was probably Jennifer Jabaley. During the how to write better session or whatever you want to call it, I was put with Vicky Alvear Schecter. Altough she wasnt my favorite i loved hearing about the cool information she told us about her research about ancient history. Now im reading Cleopatras Moon, for my historical fiction book, and the Maximum ride series (BTW totally recamened both books especially Maximum Ride!)Definatley had a great time with the Authors though!!!!!!!!!! 24. I learned a lot! The three ladies were very helpful! I love reading so maybe I might write my own book one day! I enjoy all the drama! I did note that Ms. Shelley said that the beginning and the end are the easiest but the middle and the plot and deciding how it can conclude to your special ending is the hardest! I would love to write my own book! But, sadly, I was not blessed with patience haha! I would hate to wait a year for my book to be published! They were very encouraging and somewhat sad, because you will get turned down a little bit! When I grow up, I want to be a special education elementary teacher, so maybe while I'm teaching, i can write a book!

  39. I think that the author tour was a great experience for everyone! This provided great advice for future references for writing and more. I learned a lot of good advice. For example, I learned that you can write about anything that happens, but you should rite about something that makes you exciting or something that you really want to write about. I also think that the writers set good examples for young soon to be writers. The books that they all write look like wonderful books. Lipstick Apology and Crush Control really grabbed my attention, and I really want to read them becasue they look like really amazing books to read. I think that by showing all of the students how to write and giving us tips was a great idea and really helped me with the ideas of what I could write about if I did write a book. Thank you Ms. Smith for letting them come and for future reference, this was great!!

  42. I loved the georgia Peach author tour it was very fun. I loved how they talked about there book and the procces which it takes to be an author or a writer. I think some of there stories were funny because it is weird how they got there ideas. I never thought that I would meet a real author. That was really cool. I think it is cool how they all love to write about diffrent things. They taught us how to write a book and how to set it up. I think writing a book might be fun besides how some people reject your book. Also I do not like to wait and if it takes themmore than a year and a half than I dont think I could be a writer.
Jennifer JabaleY WAS MY FAVORITE author I think she or her books had some fun charecter. I do not usually like to read all the girly books about makeup or clothes but when she talked about lipstick apology I was wanting to read it. I think that it also sounded funny how the only thing a lady has to write with is lipstick. Dont mide me I dont want to be judge mental. I really thought that was a awesome way to start halloween off. Thanks Mrs. smith

  43. Last week when the Georgia Peach authors came, it was really fun. They talked to us about the process that it takes to write and publish a book. It was really interesting learning about their background and how they started writing. They shared their ideas and how they use real life scenarios to incorporate it in their book. I thought that it was really cool. I would love to read all of their books because they sounded creative. I didn't think that it took that long to get a book published. And, even when they gave it to the publishers, some of them rejected their books. That must have been hard to hear because when you spend so much time on something and think that you gave it your all, and then you get rejected. Overall, I thought that the GA Peach author tour was really fun! I hope that I can read all of their books!

I took A LOT of notes (probably too many) and I plan to use them in anything i write. A tip! Try introducing a story in chapter one, then leave the reader hanging and wanting more. Then, in chapter two, start a new story- and later make them intercept! It gave me a ton of new ideas and perspective on writing. I had a great time!

  80. I enjoyed the author tour very much, and learned a ton of very valuable writing skills. We developed many characters, and learned several techniques that helped us be more creative in how we make our stories. I was in Mrs.Pearce's room, and was with GA Author Jennifer Jabaley. The characters we developed were very "dark" in background, but overall I had a good time and a great experinence!

  84. I thought the Ga peach tour was cool. It wasn't very peachy which is what i expected considering it has peach in the name, but overal it was pretty cool. None of thier books apealed to me because obviously I am not a 17 year old girl or a cleopatra fanatic, but other than that their books were awesome. I learned things that help in writing a book, which is classified information that I can not give out, but just maybe you could use my secret weakness. *candy* As you all know from a few of the super secret classified mini computer notecard things ago i told you what my weakness was. *candy*echo echo echo echo. This has been another super secret classified mini computer notecard thing.

  85. I really liked what we did all together, such as listening to our authur and what they do with their books. My authur talked about thrillers and how there would be more than one climax. I want to try that in a writing that I do later. Thanks for help, if you see this message.

  86. One really cool trick I learned was from S. R Johannes about thriller novels. She told me to leave chapter ends with you wanting more of the story. It was very interesting to hear them speak, and I want to read their books now! :--------) <-------Mr. Long Nose.

  90. i thought the author tour was really fun. i enjoyed getting to meet authors and realizing that they are just normal people who have an inspiration. The author I was with tought us how to write thriller stories! She taught us about dividing our chapters and haveing a bunch of suspenseful mini-plots to really hype up the reader.
She also said to make our most enjoyable moments shape our characters.

Also, she taught us how to stalk people in Barnes&Noble!

  93. I loved the GA Peach Author Tour!!!!! The authors were pretty cool and I learned a lot about getting inspiration from everywhere. You can use anything that sparks your interest, add in some past experiences, and you have yourself an outline. I also got to learn how to write a thriller that people won't be able to put down. It was so cool and I hope to do this again.

  94. I really enjoyed the Georgia Peach Author Tour. I learned that books take a long time to publish. I had no idea it took a couple of years! I also learned that authors don't really get to create their covers. My favorite part of the GA Peach Aothor Tour was having a mini lesson with one author. S.R Johannes told us how to create suspense books. That was really helpful and nobody had ever told me how to create suspense books before. Overall, I had a great time and I wish the authors could come back.

  95. The GA Peach Author Tour was really cool and very interesting! I learned about the different books the three authors wrote, as well as writing techniques to use in my own stories. For example, S. R. Johannes taught me that when I'm writing thrillers, it's a good idea to write page turners, which means including action, suspense, and multiple points of action. She also gave tips like write through your character's eyes, do the unpredictable, use voice, use all of your senses, and to up the pace through the setting of your story. S. R. Johannes also taught us that you can get ideas anywhere, so keep your eyes and ears open to get new ones.

  99. While we didn't really tour anything, and it wasn't peachy, I loved the Georgia Peach Author Tour. The reason I liked it was because it did actually feel like a conversation, instead of a boring lecture. (I also now know how to stalk people at Barnes and Noble in the name of literature.) So, I guess I can forget the whole "Not acurate title" thing.

  100. I enjoyed the GA Peach Author Tour, because the authors talked to us in a way that we could relate to and understand. I learned a couple of good writing tools. The most helpful one was to write what you know. I normally have trouble with coming up with an idea for a story, but I learned to use the things around me for ideas. S.R. Johannes gave us a lot of other cool tips too, but that one is really important.

  101. The Georgia Peach author tour was cool, but when we split up into groups, I was with S.R. Johannes, and I didn't learn much I didn't already know in the writer's workshop. I did learn that you can get lots of ideas for books by listening to other people.

With S.R. Johannes, I learned how to make the story a page turner. I also learned how to stalk people without being suspected. I'll use that skill well :)

  103. the Georgia Peach author tour was amazing. I got to learn small but helpfull skills that could create a great story. I learned that writing comes easily to others, but not as easily to others. Some times when something funny or tragic happens in your life you get an idea. I had a blasts at the presentation and learned alot.

  104. The GA Author tour was very fun and educational! I was surprised to learn just how long the process took to write a book, get it edited, and then to actually go through the publishing process. When we split up, I went with S.R. johannes. Her book sounds very interesting, and I look forward to reading it!

  109. I stayed in the Media Center with SR Joannes. I learned how to write suspense stories with a few tips. They are to spread action scenes, create tension, shock the reader, not make is 100% action, visualize a movie of the book, fragments are OK as long as they are purposeful, show from character's point of view, make it seem realistic, put in a realistic motive, put in a big idea, make it fast pace, and pace through structures.
