Titanic

As we have learned, it was 100 years ago when the heralded Titanic went down on its maiden voyage across the Atlantic. We have also learned that there are two sides to the  Titanic story. The most popular Titanic story is one that we know and romanticize. However, there is also a side to the story that involves mystery, undiscovered secrets, tragedy, and  conspiracy. In this blog post, share a few ideas about what you have learned from your informational reading and research about the Titanic. Consider your discovery moments and questions you now have about the Titanic.

  1. Based on the information I have collected from different sources, I believe that the Titanic was more than just a shipwreak. I believe that the Titanic was full of secrets and mystery. Did the disigners of the Titanic want it to sink? Why did they create a piece of the ship (The balencing piece) that they were unsure of during the making of her? I think that the Titanic sunk from poor building and the decieving nature of the crew. "The ship is unsinkable," they would say, "Please stay calm, nothing will happen."

  2. I have learned many thoeries of how the Titanic crashed, for example, the ship was weak and broke before it hit the iceberg, or the other theory where it was all planned. These thoeries all have facts backing them up, but which one is true? There aren't enough facts, but I belive thsi was all planned by someone, but what do I know? I'm just a student still in school.

  3. I have learned many new thing, one of the main things that I learned was that the bottom of the ship was not as sturdy as they think. I have one big question, Why did n't they do a test on all of the steel and metel that went into making it? What do think happened?

  4. After learning about the Titanic i was left with many questions like what exactly happened that night, and why did the survivor stories contradict each other? I want to figure these things out and hopefully one day we will know what actually brought the "unsinkable" Titanic down.

  5. well, as we leaarned in the video, they had added in a very crued expansion joint. the intent of this was to help the largest ship built at that time to flex in the middles over large waves. during a dive, they discovered the broken hull of Titanic. it shows how the titanic probably wouldn't have went down so early if it weren't for this flaw in the plan. but that is just one of the things that went wrong that cold, brilliant starry night.....

    1. I agree! The poor building and the iceburg GUARENTEED that the ship would sink. If only people were not so convinced that it wouldnt sink.

  6. since we have been talking about the titanic i have learned a lot. i really do think there was a design flaw in the boat that caused it to break in half. i think the iceberg just assisted it to break in half.

  7. I have never seen the movie so i really see the Titanic as an old ship that sank and killed a lot of people. It is very sad that so many people died but What I don't understand why people keep trying to figure out a different for why it sank. It ran into an icebureg and got a hole in the bottom and it starte to fill with water until it sank. ~Emily C

    1. I agree, I don't believe that there was any consparacy. Sure, the builders neglected alot of things, but overall, I don't think anyone meant for the Titanic to sink. However,I do think that the ship's poor design also contributed to the sinking.

  8. The Titanic was thought to be an unsinkable ship. Unfortunately, that proved to be wrong. However, some people believe that the Titanic had an achilles heel. They tink that it broke at a shallow angle instead of a high angle. I am not sure if this is true, but it seems believeable to me. Also there is the story everybody knows. E.D.

  10. There were a few things I thought about after I saw the other side of the Titanic.
    1. Was it too soon to try and make a big and indestructable ship. The designs were too weak.
    2. Why didn't they put more lifeboats on the ship? Some people are stuburn and others are extremely stuburn.

    1. Elizabeth, The reason that there were less lifeboats was because they thought it wouldn't make the ship look "pretty"

  11. The Titanic was a huge ship that was unsinkable, but it sinked when it hit an iceberg. I think that there was some structural flaws in the Titanic that made it sink so quikley. Some of the things to question about, is why didn't the Titanic have enough life boats, why they did not listen to the ice warnings, and why the ship sank so easily.
These are my comments on the Titanic.

  12. According to the video, "The Titanic's Achille's Heel", it seemed like the builders of the ship, the White Star Line, cared way more about the way that the Titanic looked than how safe it was for the passengers. The boiler rooms were originally supposed to be higher up, but the White Star Line moved them down to make more room for the first class passengers. Also, they got rid of a lot of the lifeboats because they thought that the deck would look too cluttered!

  13. what really happened on the night of April 16, 1912. did the boat really crash on its own. or did they use the iceburge as a cover up story. i dont know what to beilive and what not to beilive...

    ReplyDelete
  14. I beleive that the Titanic would not have been such a tragic story if the White Star Line had thought that a few precautions needed to be taken to a further extent. First of all, there were only 16 lifeboats, when there should be 32 in order to save everyone on the ship. Secondly, the ship should have stopped the boat after the fifth iceberg warning, for that was a sure sign that something was going to go wrong. The crew didn't even bother to put out the fire in the boiler room. That's just what the crew could have done.
The passengers also had some impact on their own death. when the iceberg hit, some people were not curious to see what was going on, they just believed it was a minor problem. Not to mention that the first few lifeboats only went half full. Not to mention that they were too worried about having fun, and believed the unbelievable, that the ship was unsinkable. If the passengers had been more intent, they might have been saved.
All of these fatalities could have been avoided if the company decided to not worry about time, just precautions about what could go wrong. It is sad to think that all of those deaths could have been avoided.

  15. Well, I have not seen the movie so IDK what it like and I havent done too much research but, I wonder, what would have happened if the stern hadnt broken in half? Did the workers who built the ship mean to cause a flaw? What is this Consipricay they r talking about? I. Am. So. Confused!!!!! SOS! Lol... SOS... Well Bye!!!!

  16. People in 1912 thought that the titanic,TITANIC was unsinkable until the night it hit the iceberg and split in half and sank into the atlantic. But what really questions me why did they ignore the ice warnings and didn't stop for a night.:'

  17. Considering I have never seen the movie Titanic, my opinions and mindset on the Titanic are not tainted. I also like to read and do research on things like this, and I also recieved a National Geographic magazine on the topic as well. It has a diagram that shows where the Titanic landed and how long the process took. I love how people illustrate their own stories with thier words and I think this is a very interesting subject. I want to watch the movie just to see how the directors told this story. But my parents might have to skip over a few parts in the movie. ;)

  18. 100 years ago, the famous Titanic ship sunk in the Atnatic ocean. The story that everyone knows is one of tragedy and romance. But it the real story about to be uncovered?

Now we are learning about ways that the titanic might have otherwise sunk. The hull was to weak, there were mistakes like not taking ice warnings seriously. Scientists have come up with numerous ways that the ship or thousands of lives could have been saved.

Maybe if we had our technology now things could be different.

  20. From watching the captivating HISTORY channel video on the Titanic, I have learnt that the Titanic movie was merely a, "powdered up" version of the actual story. The actual story involved the improper engineering of the Titanic, which had a miniscule amount of steel, which was incredibly innapropriate for a cruise ship of such size. My discovery from the HISTORY channel videov was that the Titanic tragedy could have been easily prevented, using more steel, and more lifeboats. Even if fate would still have redirected to the destructive iceberg, more lifeboats would have greatly increased the amount of lives saved. The Titanic was certainly a tragedy, bus as with all things bad, come with good, it gave us a chance to correct the "titanic" flaws of the Titanic, and use them to build better, and safer ships and correct ourselves in the future.

  21. The story of the Titanic of Titanic is actually very interesting! There is suspenseful thrill of finding mysteries and clues to how the Titanic really sank! There are always the stories said of the sinking, and how dramatic it was, but is it real? That leads to discovery of the wreakage of this immense piece of metal, figuring how the tragic lives of many ended! The conspiracy of the sinking gives many the suspicion how it could have ended differently! Interesting... :D

  30. I dont know how a boat this big was even able to make it as far as it did. There were a few big mistakes that i thought were crazy.
1: the boat didnt have enough life boats.
2:the ship put on extra weight because they didnt even need the 4 steam roller
3: Why would they seperate the people into differant levels when the levels could be used for something else.

Of coarse these changes didnt happen and the Titanic sunk but i wonder what would have happened that night if the Carpathia would have gotten there sooner.

  32. Wow the Titanic was an amazing ship! While I might love the Titanic movie with romance there are other stories that are very intresting about the titanic and I would like to find out about them! Some questions I have are... was the the Titanic built correctly. WAs the Titanic desighed safly. was the space were thre ship split because of the place were the ship would go smothly across waves. Finally was there already a problem with the ship befor it hit the iceburg? Thease are all questions i have and i am sure lots of other people have! I really hope the scientists make some great discoveries

  33. I loved the story of the titanic. It was very interesting and I learned a lot in the video. From what people were saying, the Titanic didn't actually rise up that high and break. The Titanic could have been prevented, but the man who made the ship wanted the workers to use as little material as possible. It was a very tragic and unforgettable story. One of the bad parts was that there weren't as many lifeboats as there were people. Some had to watch their loveed ones die helplessly in the water. I would like to know what it was like in the boat at the time? Why weren't they scared at first, when they heard all of the noises of the boat crashing? Therefore, I hope that there isn't another Titanic, and I hope that we can prevent it with all of the technology and other things that we have today.

  34. the story behind the titanic is different from both sides but of course the love story is better. but knowing something was wrong and if the flaw was fixed the Titanic could have been saved and gone down in history as the biggest ship to sail the atlantic or something. it could still be around today in a extremly huge museum or it could still be running. and if the Titanic had more lifeboats then more people would have been saved or even if the message had been carried faster it might of had more time for it to turn more. BTW ive never even seen the movie soo..yupp

  35. The titanic, also known as the unsinkable ship I believe is more than just a ship reck. I believe that something caused this to happen. But what caused it? And how did it happen? From my information I have gathered I'm trying to figure out my own theory. AG

  36. The Titanic is a really tragic story and movie...What I have learned from the movie is how the Titanic actually sank. Everyone thought that the Titanic was an unsinkable ship, but it was an unsinkable ship. What would happen if the ship didn't sink and the stern didn't break in half? I think that they should've had a lot more lifeboats so they could've saved more people instead of letting then die. I also thought that why didn't they build the Titanic stronger instead of it being so weak and letting millions of people get killed? It really is a suspicious mystery for people.

    ReplyDelete
  37. What have I learned about the Titanic? Well, I already knew a lot about the Titanic, but some of the things that I have recently read about are fairly knew to me. For example, I did not know that the Titanic broke or snapped in half. From all of the stories I have read about the ship, none of them said anything about the ship breaking in half. Also, I did not know that people in the third-class had to share one bathtub for 700 or more people. I think that it is very sad that there were not enough lifeboats for all of the people, even thought that is what you are suppose to have when you have that many people on a ship at one time.
Nobody knows the whole reason of why the Titanic sank. People say that the ship wouldn't have sank if the builders would have built the bottom more study. The Titanic is very suspenseful and a mystery to me, because the people who were on the boat don't even know exactly what happened.Peoplealso know that this true and realistic story was a true and giant tragedy for all of the families and friends and the children that could've lived a wonderful life full of great experiences and adventures. That is what I think about the Titanic and it's true meaning.

MOST PEOPLE IN THE WORLD JUST SAY "OH, THE TITANIC HIT AN ICEBERG AND JUST SUNK" AND THATS ALL THEY THINK OF WHAT HAPPEN THAT NIGHT 100 YEARS AGO. BUT, OTHER PEOPLE SUSPECT DIFFERENT. THEY SAY THAT IF SOMETHINGS WERE WAS ADDED AND SOMETHINGS WERE TAKEN OFF OF THE TINTANIC SHIP WHILE BEING BUILT THEN THAT CRASHED WOULD MOST LIKLY NEVER OF HAPPEND. THIS STORY WAS TURNED INTO AN INTERESTING STORY TO A VERY INTERESTING STORY THAT PROBABLY WILL NEVER BE SOLVED. AND NOBODTY WILL NEVER KNOW WHAT HAPPEND THAT NIGHT!!!!!!!!!<3

  39. The Titanic wreck is one of the worst tradegies of our history! 1500 people went down with her! The researchers have a theory that the Titanic didnt rise as high as most people think. They believe the Titanic didnt have an expansion joint. Also, since the Titanic was so large, it wouldnt rise with the waves, it would rise between two waves. But one theory, which I believe the most, is that without the expansio joint, the Titanic broke in half way before it got too high. And the hull wasnt as strong as many people believe. It was actually quite weak! This was a horrbile accident, but what amazes me, is the stupidity and carelessness of the workers! They only put less than half of the lifeboats on bcause they believed the ship was unsinkable! And, they got close to 20 warnings of icebergs and did nothing about it! The last warning was never delivered to the captain! There were so many ways to avoid it, yet, they did nothing. I wish we could go back in time and redo that period of time, and turn the ship around! 1500 more lives would've been saved! Another sad thing is that many survivors had survivors remorse and wound up killing themselves. They were thinking, "Why did I survive?" "Why couldn't help my family?" and on the ship, some people just killed themselves knowing they werent going to survive! It's a really sad story!

  40. I realy do like the story of the titanic i think i like it because it is a mystery that has not been solved. I love mystery. Many people beleive different thing but i beleive that it did split in half because it was so high in the air the boat could nnot carry itself. Also some people thought that it did not split and some people beleive that is only lifted up a tiny bit and broke. How did everyone think that the boat was unsinkable with all that weight? There was a lot of weight on that boat they had a pool a gym maybe it is just me but i would never go on a boat that big. I have gone on a big boat but not one that could hold more that 2000 people that is insain!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I would have had a test run to see if the boat could go over high waves so they dont risk thousands of peoples lifes. I think that even if they had not hitten a n iceburgh that it would still broken appart becaus of how it had to go over the waves and it might be much on the titanic. Befor this year I really did not knoe anything about the titanic all I really knew is that is sunk by an iceburg. I didnt know the date time how many people survived. I have really enjoyed learning all about this and hope to learn more.

  41. The titanic is very large in size. This story is questionable because there are many theories of the sinking of the mighty ship which has what I think has a very exquisite interior design with many beliefs of the titanic as people say "unsinkable." This is quite the story which I haven't seen any movies of it. Many people say this is a very tragic story. What I have read of the stories is that there could have been other reasons leading to the sinking, and for the people who escaped might have seen different things. Do you think any people went crazy and jumped off the ship? Was there any survivors who fallen off the lifeboats and other people left them? Did any of the people left on the ship escape and got to shore somewhere? The world may never know....

  42. The event of the Titanic that occured 100 years was very tragic and could of been easily prevented. First of all, they put a bend in the ship so it would be able to move with the waves. That bend caused the ship to be weaker than it needed to be. Also, there wasn't enough lifeboats on the ship for everyone. But when we read about the Titanic in the Literature book, it said that the boats left with less people than they could of. The fact that there wasn't enough lifeboats contributed to event of lives being lost.

  43. the Titanic was one of the greatest failures in boatkind. However, there may be two sides to the story. My hypothesis is that Harland and western might have overspent on the fund project, and intentionally crashed the ship to get back the money from insurance. It is also possible that white star lines told the engineers to put less steel and iron plating in some places to save up on costs. For all we know, it could have just been a horrible conincedence. Maybye we'll never know....

Now that i know more about everything that happened on her maiden voyage, I'm starting to question the same thing... was it the iceberg that sent Titanic to her her doom? 46. I think that overall, the Titanic is a tragety that shouldn't be fogotten. There was lots of neglect, poor thought, and actions based on things only supposed associated with the planning, building, and launching of the Titanic. However, I think it ends there. Many people ignored things they shouldn't have and accepted that the Titanic was unsinkable without questioning it more, but I don't think anyone honestly plotted to bring the Titanic down.

  48. The crash of the Titanic happened 100 years ago, and this bad happening couldve been prevented. You see the builders...
the white star line made the ship with a bend in the ship so that it could easily move alongwith the waves, but this casued the ship to be much weaker...and actually dangerously weak! so if they had built the ship differently the ship wouldnt have sunk, especially after it hit the ice berg.

The world wanted to find out. Was there a flaw in the design, or had there just been an unlucky fluke? With about 1500 lifes lost, and only about 750 saved the tradgedy was unseemable. The rich and famous went down with the maids, and Captain Smith retired in a different way than he thought. How could this happen, why is our world scarred for eternity?!

  59. i find the titnatic very interesting. It was somehting that today people say that the people then were not thinking but in away it wasnt their fault. They had designed the boat with their knowledge to be unsinkable. This had never really happend....well nothing this bad ,so they did not think that they needed to be more precautious about the life boats. This incedidnt actually helped us if this had not happened we would not be as careful.

  65. The Titanic is full of mystery. Some things about it are suspicious. For example, the White Star Line removed half of the lifeboats because the deck looked too "cluttered". On the other hand, nobody could really predict the sinking of a ship and change the event from happening. I have no idea what happened to the Titanic or why.
I think that is what makes tht Titanic so interesting. Nobody really nones what happened to the Titanic.

  69. One big flaw in the Titanic was the lack of lifeboats. If there were enough lifeboats to provide for all the passnegers aboard, there wouldnt have been as many deaths. Also, the passengers were not frantic because they had been promised of the strength of the ship, and they had no doubt that it was indeed unsinkable.

  70. In the short video that we watched about the Titanic, the researchers said that the ship could have possibly bent with the waves. If so, was it built so that it could bend with the waves? If that is true, then that would bring another question. Could that be the reason that it broke?

  71. I learned many things throught the week and I don't think it was a conciprcy but simply over confidents and not preparing for the worst possible sitution.I also think that if the Titanic didn't sink then safty abord lagre ships like that would be a lot worse then they are today.

  72. The Titanic is definately a mystery. The majoritiy of people believe that an iceberg was the cause of the tradgedy.Others who are doing research believe that there was another reason for the sinking. They also believe that the ship broke in a more shallow angle than what other people say. A flaw in the Titanic's design could have been the reason for it to break at such a shallow angle. There was a death of 15,000 people and only 700 people survived. This is probably the most-well known tradgedy everywhere around the world.

  73. The titanic was a tragedy, and there are many mysyteries involved. I think that the design was flawed, and i am suprised that a ship that important would be so poorly made. I was also suprised at how few lifeboats they brought if they knew they would have too many people

  75. Over the past couple of days i have learned that scientists believe that the Titanic's wreck was caused by more than an iceberg. I think the Titanic had alot of major industrial problems. The metal was very thin and uncapable of holding the amount of people on the ship, 2000. So i beleive, the Titanic was sunkin by an iceburg, with the help of humans.

  76. The Titanic was marvelous, large, and luxurious, but it was very weak. It gave some dissapointment to most of the people, and it dissapointed and made me sad. I can't believe that the Titanic didn't have enough lifeboats. Only 700 people survived, and the others, 3rd class passengers, died. Scientists are still figuring out the problem, and some think that it was because of the construction of the ship. The mystery of Titanic should be solved!

  77. The Titanic is a true tragedy in world history. Movies can never portray the true horror. I think that a lot of the problems were in the planning. They put a weak spot in the center of the ship to let the waves through even though it was optional! they also didn't even think about putting enough lifeboats. A lot of things could've been done before the maiden voyage that could've saved 1500 lives. Fate isn't always kind.

  78. I think that the Titanic sank because it was pretty weak. I mean nobody (except maybe not respected people) would want it to sink. It was the "Beauty of the Sea". I know that 1500 people went down with it, and that 1/2 of the spaces on the lifeboats were wasted because people believed the sink was "Unsinkable". They weren't that worried. Then around the time the last lifeboat left, the panic was outrageous. I also know that 700 people were saved. It was very sad. Many people had losses.

  79. The movie sumed up most of my questions like how the Titanic broke at the low angle. Yes, I do think a GAP in otherwise STRONG STEEL would affect WHERE it BREAKS. Though I do have a question: What IDIOT has life boats on an UNSINKABLE ship but DOESN'T have enough for EVERYBODY. Wastes of money if it sank or if it floated.

  80. A century ago, the most famous shipwreck happened. The Titanic sank in the middle of the Atlantic. I have listened to many documentries, and read many stories. The life boat practice was canceled. Why? Why did they not carry enough lifeboats? The ship was probably big enough to hold it.

  81. I think the titanic was failure in design. It is unfortunate that many people died. The diasaster could have been prevented if the builders took more time and made their design better and safer. What was thought to be unsinkable was very vulnerable to icebergs and other things.

  82. I've learned alot about the Titanic. I never knew that it was the design of the ship that sank it, rather than the iceberg itself or the ignorance of the crew. I also want to know what happened to White Star Line after the disaster, and why the crew was so ignorant after 7 ice warnings in 1 day.

  83. There are certain conspiracies that the Titanic that I absolutely believe. What are the odds that the "Unsinkable" ship sinks. What are the odds that a quite alike book can foreshadow history? And let us not forget the fact that many crew members bailed at the last minute. Let's not forget that in the 20s, the White Star line became Cunard-White Star! Could this mean that the two companies had special ties? This leads to my theory that Cunard's Carpathia planned to save White Star's Titanic. The only blank spot is why White Star would purposefully kill 1500.

  84. I learned that there wasnt enough life boats to support all of the passengers, and also, some people believe that the Titanic had engineering flaws. The Titanic is not only a ship its a word that means huge and grand, like the Titanic. Also, the passengers were strictly seperated by wealth.

  85. 100 years ago the biggest tradgedy in man-made movable objects occured. Many believe that the destruction of the titanic was more than an iceburg, they believe that the construction and layout of the titanic was a problem that occured also. The layout was made so that the bottom of the boat would bend or be "flexible" when large or small waves came up. when the titanic crashed into the iceburg it should have surrvived a longer period of time than it did. This was because a large wave came upon the ship causing damage to be a larger quality than it already was, the ship is said to have snapped in half. I wonder why the ship only had enough life boats for less than half of the attendants?

  86. 100 years ago the Titanic sunk and brought 1500 people down with it. This event shocked the world, and surprised many. But, there's a mystery behind every story. They say that the iceberg was a contributing factor to the sinking, but some say that it was a design flaw when they were in the process of building it. This discovery may change all we know about the Titanic. I also wonder why the ship closest to them didn't come and rescue the Titanic, and why they were not enough lifeboats to support everyone on the ship.

  87. The titanic was a gigantic floating piece of shizzle, due to the fact that it sunk by only being bumped by an iceberg. And, with the small crack in the ship designed to let it bend, I just don't get it. Why put something in your ship design that was very abstract and unknown at that period of time. I would stick with something that I actually knew how to build and ensure that it was safe.

Those guys were all uber stupid. Except for that guy in the New York Times who actually knew what was going on.

  88. I believe that there was many flaws with the design of the Titanic, but was manageaable for sea sailing. However, when the ship smashed into the iceberg, the flaws became serious. I have noticed that the ship could have been too long, or not very symmetrical, or maybe someone messed it up so it would sink dooming millions of lives. There may have been no lives risked if there were enough lifeboats.

  89. 100 years ago, the so called "unsinkable" ship, the Titanic sunk. On her maiden voyage from Southampton to New York, the ship hit an iceberg and tradgically fell to the bottom of the Atlantic ocean. The luxurious ship was supposed to be very sturdy, strong, and dependable, or at least that's how they portrayed it to be. However, there were quite a few flaws about the nine decked ship that the passengers were not aware of. For example, the material at the bottom of the ship was not very sturdy, the compartments at the bottom of the ship could only hold four compartments full of water before sinking, and most tradgic of all, there were only enough lifeboats for seven hundred (700) passengers. In my opinion, despite the assurance that the ship was "unsinkable", the boat crew should have taken extra safety precautions. I've heard that the ship didin't have enough lifeboats because they thought that they made the ship look too crowded. If I were a member of the Titanic's crew, I for one would have made sure that there were enough safety precautions. One thing I was wondering while learning about the Titanic was why did the people who worked in the message recieving room ignore most of the iceberg warnings?

  90. Chinese poetry is complex, short, and sometimes compicated. One detail that we noticed was that poetry was often written about common people's life. Also, we thought that it was cool that the poems still had rhythm, even though it was origionaly Chinese, not English.
